Skype joins Microsoft, Google, Yahoo, among other companies to censor material for the Chinese government

Skype is the latest company that will agree to censor material to ensure that it will be allowed to operate in the country.  The company admitted to filtering certain words in text messages, including "Falun Gong" and "Dalai Lama," according to the Financial Times.  China is one of Skype's biggest markets, so the public announcement is not too shocking.  The announcement from Skype comes at a time when China is defending its right to police the Internet, and companies are under heavy fire for agreeing so quickly to censor material.  According to the Financial Times:

He claimed that compliance with Chinese censorship was no different from obeying rules governing business in western countries. China, along with the US and Germany, is one of Skype’s three biggest markets in terms of active users of its free telephony service, which routes encrypted calls between computers via the internet.

Currently, US companies like Yahoo, Google and Microsoft censor material to comply with the Chinese government's demands.

I uninstalled skype, it's just unacceptable to have a chat client that would censor my conversations.

Wwhat sat down with his "Made in China" keyboard and cobbled together:

"I uninstalled skype, it's just unacceptable to have a chat client that would censor my conversations."

While you are at it, why not stop buying "Made in China" products like most of the stuff you probably own?

Indirectly, helping Chinese citizens make money by buying their products helps stop oppression. Censoring them does not.

Yeah right! Paying $50 for someone in china got only 8c for making it really helps him. Since you are soo much pro human rights why not buy everything made in china only in a convention that the chinese worker recieves the right amount of pay for his work.

Great, I bought stuff made in china, so now I can also get rid of human rights and join in the abuse, perfect logic, works for bush after all.
It's especially funny coming from a romanian, the country where they replaced a communist dictator with a non-communist dictator I hear, you people seem to have your finger on logic and sensible behavior alright, ha.

Yeah go to personal atacks why not.
All I was saying is that buying chinese built products doesn't help them one bit since all the profit goes to the big corporate that employs them. Maybe you are working with/in a the big corporation and that's why you jumped on me??
The way I see it if a company sells a product at more than 10 times the price to bring it on the shelf they are either selling the most wanted product on the planet and can charge wathever they like, or they are screwing (spell??) someone in the manufacturing process. And I know that thechnology needs to recover the R&D investement, but there are tons of other stuff manufactured in China that need just to be molded, asambled and sold.
And I think it's imposible to even try to not have one single product made in China. But that doesn't mean we help the chinese worker.

All this has nothing to do with a chat client censoring people's communication.
There is no earthly reason for ebay to filter a software-only product like skype to support chinese supression, they can just host the servers and clientdownload on their US or elsewhere site and say goto hell china (or gonzales or whoever asks them to censor personal chat).
As for the 'personal' attack, I attacked your country, and you brough up your country, besides that I admit freely that my country sucks ass too and its government I'm sure loves the idea of censoring chat once they can get away with it.
It's up to us to stop the people who would support such efforts and not go attack eachother because we bough a product made in china, yes the wages are low and western companies are unfairly exploiting them, that doesn't mean we should help them to be censored to boot does it.
And no I do not work for a big corperation, and in fact I could not do so.
