Buy a coffee and enjoy free Wi-Fi

Back in 2008 Starbucks began offering iPhone owners free Wi-Fi.  Since that time, it has slowly expanded free Wi-Fi benefits to other groups, including Green card and Gold card members.  To get 2-hours of free Wi-Fi, you had to use your card and sign up for a complementary account from AT&T.

Now Starbucks has posted some exciting news on its corporate Twitter account.  Representative Brad Nelson writes:

We're very excited to announce that coming July 1st: Free. 1 click. No registration WIFI at all US locations! :-)

Many customers will appreciate not having to submit information to AT&T, especially given the company's recent security headaches.  It also should also help keep Starbucks competitive with rivals like Borders Books, which currently offer unlimited free Wi-Fi, with no need to register.

It's safe to assume that Starbucks has taken the necessary precautions to block p2p and filesharing traffic (you would assume).  There may also be other limitations to the in-store Wi-Fi connections.

Still, that's a small price to pay, considering Starbucks has over 10,000 stores in the U.S. alone.

Why improve on their product when their customers know no better and they are still making good money?
Its like asking McDonalds why they dont make gourmet burgers? (incidentally McD's are making gourmet burgers where I am but I still wouldnt call them gourmet - hence my point)

Sounds like customers of a certain Cuppertino based company....
