Yes, it finally has Wi-Fi

It's hard to believe that it's been nearly five years since the original Xbox 360 launched. The Xbox 360 hit the market a year ahead of the Nintendo Wii and PlayStation 3 and continues to do quite well in the marketplace. Thanks to a relatively healthy stable library of exclusive games and the second-to-none Xbox Live gaming service, gamers keep coming back for more despite years of RROD issues.

Over the years, the Xbox 360 has gone through a number of hardware changes. Advances in manufacturing technologies for GPU and CPU have resulted in smaller, cooler running chips; and HDMI output has made its way to the console. Storage capacities have been bumped, new colors have been added, and special editions have announced.

However, the basic design of the console has remained the same -- until now. Today at E3, Microsoft unveiled a new look for the Xbox 360.

The new Xbox 360 is smaller, sleeker, quieter and comes with an integrated 250GB hard drive (removable) and five USB ports (two in the front, three in the back). And yes folks, it FINALLY has built-in Wi-Fi (802.11n). It will be priced at $299 and will be in stores later this week.

According to Engadget, the current Xbox 360 Elite will drop down to $249 while the Xbox 360 Arcade will fall to $149.

In other Xbox 360 news, Microsoft today officially announced the Kinect accessory which captures full body motion for immersive gaming.

I want news about the next gen. From all THREE console makers. We're going on five years for the 360 now, it's time to move up. We need full 1080p120hz 3d and hopefully even multimonitor support now. PC graphics can't fully utilize new hardware because the developers are developing for the lowest common denominator. Cmon, 5 years is plenty, we need a new gen next year!

Agreed, I still firmly believe there is a truly new console coming out sooner than later.

November is going to be a huge month for Xbox; Halo Reach, Black Ops, and Natal. I wouldn't be surprised if there is a surpise release of new hardware.

Not me, especially in this bad economy. Maybe Nintendo needs to release more powerful hardware but as far as I am concerned, It wouldn't make any sense for Sony or MS to launch new platforms, especially given they probably haven't made much on the current consoles, the enormous amount of capital needed to launch, plus I think both consoles have plenty of life. I own 80 360 games, 15 PS3 games, so I am absolutely loving this gen. Will get the slim this week, so I should be well covered.

If the consoles are not as powerful as you need then maybe the PC might better suit your needs, but for alot of us, console only gamers, the PS3 & 360 are fantastic, 4-5 years into this gen, & the longer this gen goes the better.

Actually, the longer this generation runs, the worse for the games (and subsequently us), especially the majority of titles which are developed for the console and ported to PC.

It's not an issue if Microsoft hasn't made much from selling 40 million consoles -- they've profited immensely from software and accessories in the last 4½ years and by this point surpassed sales of original Xbox merch almost twofold. Who says there isn't a place in the market for new hardware?

Since so many others are quick to draw comparison to the slim PS2, I'd started thinking about the recent DSi XL launch -- 5½ years into that platform and Nintendo decided to beef up the screens about a year before the launch of their next-gen handheld. It's strategic. Buy and buy again.

If Microsoft pulled a similar move, I'd expect the next Xbox to be natively compatible with all of the 360's titles and continue LIVE in its current iteration (simply wasn't feasible last time around) and no one would be left in the dark. That Microsoft has reduced their current line to one SKU suggests to me that their production dollars are being diverted elsewhere, and if it means they're once again the first to the punch, it could mean another healthy head start for them and another strong market for us. But I can only speculate.

But new hardware or no, it isn't likely that the 360 will taper off as quickly as the original did. I only wish that they'd designed the Xbox to incorporate into future consoles more easily. I'm only a fan of emulation when a PC is the host.

Microsoft is currently leading the console pack in the online platform sphere and will have total hardware dominance in 2012. Id tech 5 will run on the next Xbox and Doom 4 will be an Xbox exclusive release. Just watch E3 in 2011. We will see an oh so sexy new Xbox sitting up there looking fine.

Did you just say Id? They are a crap company. Doom 3 and Quake 4 sucked ass and that whole stupid engine failed. Hence why pretty much everything runs off the Unreal Engine.

Hope Carmack gets hit by a car.

have you seen the specs on Id tech 5?

It's the first in a very new age of FPS engines

Yes, because reading a spec sheet is going to tell me exactly how awesome a game engine is going to be. Remember the awesome specs of the Crysis engine? How'd that work out?
