The original Droid is doing just fine, while the HTC Droid Incredible gets rooted

The smartphone world is very competitive and typically when one device is offered with a new feature competitors quickly offer new handsets with similar features. This happened in the industry when Apple offered the touchscreen-only iPhone. Shortly after the original iPhone launched there were numerous touchscreen phones on the market.

The next feature to be widely touted by manufacturers – but by no means a new feature for smartphones -- is a front facing camera for video conferencing, which is of dubious value to many users. The iPhone 4 announced earlier this week will have a front facing camera to support video conferencing. The HTC EVO 4G for Sprint also has a front camera for video conferencing.

Reuters reports that Motorola co-CEO Sanjay Jha has stated that Motorola will offer three or four handsets this year that support video conferencing with a forward facing camera. However, Jha said, "[I have] never been a great believer [in the demand for video conferencing]."

Jha also told
Reuters that sales of the Droid smartphone are very robust despite the similarly named HTC Droid Incredible handset. Jha said, "Sales are going extremely well. If I could build more I'd sell more." Jha wasn't specific on which component is in short supply and is hurting Motorola's ability to put enough Droid handsets on the market.

It is believed that a shortage of screens is keeping both Motorola and HTC from being able to produce as many of their respective Droid devices as they would like. Part of the robust sales of the Motorola Droid handset can likely be attributed to the buy one, get one free deal running with Verizon.

In other Droid news, the Droid Incredible has also been rooted recently allowing users to install and run various software and services on the device. The Root is detailed here.

"Game reviewers fought each other to write the most glowing coverage possible for the powerhouse Sony, MS systems. Reviewers flipped coins to see who would review the Nintendo Wii. The losers got stuck with the job." -- Andy Marken
