Walmart slashes price of iPhone 3GS by $100 starting today

Well, we can't say that this is totally unexpected, but we just didn't expect for this price cut to take effect so soon. According to CNN Money, Walmart is cutting the price of the 16GB iPhone 3G to just $97, which represents a $100 price cut from its usual price.

The move comes just two weeks ahead of the official announcement of the iPhone 4G (although we've all seen pretty much every angle of the upcoming smartphone). The price cut could either be an effort to clear out inventory ahead of the iPhone 4G launch or more likely, it will become the new entry-level iPhone model.

If you recall, when the iPhone 3GS launched around this time last year, it was priced at $199 and $299 respectively for the 16GB and 32GB models. The older 8GB iPhone 3G was reduced in price to $99 to snag more price conscious buyers.

However, the $100 price cut really means little in the grand scheme of things considering that the phone is going to cost you at least $1,680 over the course of a two-year contract in service fees alone.

In other Apple news, the company today kicked off its annual back-to-school promotion. Customers who buy a qualifying MacBook, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, or iMac computer can get a free 8GB iPod touch after a mail-in rebate.

in the UK it's not perfect, while getting a 16gb 3GS would cost you $1300 roughly, our options are a bit crap, to get the phone free, you#re paing £50 a month, which is a lot of money imo for a phone contract.

either way, today i ordered an HTC desire, to get a 16gb iphone 3gs on the same contract i'd have had to pay over £100 more so i'm really not fussed :)

Out of interest, what sort of contract and price did you get for your HTC desire in the UK?

I'm from the UK too, and got mine on T-Mobile a couple of months ago. £130, plus £20 a month for 18 months, which got 300 mins calls, unlimited text and unlimited* internet.

Now I look, as my wife's contract is up, and almost all the smart phones out there (iPhone, Desire, X10) have gone up in price by a not inconsiderable amount, with some monthly options not even available any more. I think £30 a month is the minimum you can get now from some providers?

What's going on?

* Usual 1GB a month cap I think.

i'm on o2, and am stuck for now due to using them for broadband as well (half price alongside phone contract).

the handset was £49.99 which i countered by trading a samsung omnia for £50 to them, and then it's £35 a month for 18 months with 600 minutes i think, unlimited tex data and wifi (apparently i have free wifi to the cloud :p yay)

might be a bit expensive, but i'm not too fussed. it's when they're asking me £30 a month plus £200 for the handset that i take a step back and tell them to go and sodomise themselves

Cheapest UK option if you can afford it is to buy an iPhone SIM-free (approx. £500-600) then a SIM-only plan at £15-a-month (or more depends on what talktime you need).

If you are smart you can tie it in with another subsidy such as a (free) laptop or LCD TV and basic Nokia phone and end up paying about £1000 over 2 years getting a basic Nokia (sell it on eBay), Sony laptop, iPhone and better flexibility.

Obviously this requires you have £500-ish kicking around, but most of the people over here see the word 'FREE' and don't consider that paying £50/month instead of £20/month (and money upfront) makes it work out anything but free, just seeing 'no upfront cost'...
