If you've got a Nexus One in your possession, hurry up and download Android 2.2

Earlier this morning, it was discovered that Google was upgrading the Nexus One to the impressive new Android 2.2 operating system with an over-the-air (OTA) update. However, it quickly became apparent that this wasn't being delivered as a general release for everyone in possession of a Nexus One -- the update was only being pushed out to review samples that had been sent out by Google earlier this year.

Now, however, some rather inventive folks have found the direct download link so that everyone with a Nexus One can enjoy some Froyo sweetness. The only catch is that the Nexus One must be in non-rooted, stock ERD79 form.

You can download the update direct from Google here, or get a mirror download here.

User rheza02 over at XDA-Developers describes the update process as follows:

If you are on a completely stock ERD79 device (including stock recovery image), you can use the official ERE27 update (this is the same as the OTA update). Just download it, put it on the SD card named update.zip, launch recovery (power on with volume down held), press power and volume up when the warning triangle icon appears then select 'apply update.zip'.

Android 2.2 (Froyo) brings with it a new JIT compiler for faster application performance, a new V8 JavaScript engine for better internet browser performance, native internet tethering and Wi-Fi hotspot, and support for Adobe Flash 10.1.

1) rename the file -- update.zip
2) power-down your phone
3) power-on your phone with the volume down key depressed
4) wait for the screen with the Androids on skateboards
5) select recovery
6) wait for the screen with the Android and the ! in a triangle
7) hold power-on with the volume up key depressed
8) select load from SD card

So far so good. But when I get to the screen with the triangle, where I would select "apply sdcard:update.zip" I get an error message of "E: Can't open /cache/recovery/command"

Any suggestion Mr. Wizard?
