If you've got a Nexus One in your possession, hurry up and download Android 2.2

Earlier this morning, it was discovered that Google was upgrading the Nexus One to the impressive new Android 2.2 operating system with an over-the-air (OTA) update. However, it quickly became apparent that this wasn't being delivered as a general release for everyone in possession of a Nexus One -- the update was only being pushed out to review samples that had been sent out by Google earlier this year.

Now, however, some rather inventive folks have found the direct download link so that everyone with a Nexus One can enjoy some Froyo sweetness. The only catch is that the Nexus One must be in non-rooted, stock ERD79 form.

You can download the update direct from Google here, or get a mirror download here.

User rheza02 over at XDA-Developers describes the update process as follows:

If you are on a completely stock ERD79 device (including stock recovery image), you can use the official ERE27 update (this is the same as the OTA update). Just download it, put it on the SD card named, launch recovery (power on with volume down held), press power and volume up when the warning triangle icon appears then select 'apply'.

Android 2.2 (Froyo) brings with it a new JIT compiler for faster application performance, a new V8 JavaScript engine for better internet browser performance, native internet tethering and Wi-Fi hotspot, and support for Adobe Flash 10.1.

Android runs a modified Linux kernel. In linux the "root" user has super-administrative powers -- the ability to issue any command, modify or delete system files, take control of other users' files, etc. Non-rooted means that you did not play with the Android OS to gain access to the root account.

If you don't know what root is, you're almost certainly non-rooted.

Problem is, the vast majority of consumers don't know this and probably don't care.

Likewise the vast majority of consumers probably don't care to upgrade their phone OS ahead of the OTA update. So how is that a problem?

Yes, that's true. If you don't know what even the term "rooted" or "non-rooted" means, then it's better that you don't even upgrade unless you have a friend or relative who know what the hell they're doing, I would even be cautious then. - BLUEBOY

So "root" is to Android what "jailbreak" is to the iPhone?

I would say that's a rather good analogy, but from what I understand the only real point of rooting an android phone is to use a modified OS. And also from what I know the only reason to use a modified OS is to get the latest update, like version 2.1 or 2.2, because carriers can be slow on pushing out the appropriate updates.

Root ing is similar to jailbreak ing except that the Nexus One comes with an unlockable bootloader and it is legal to unlock a Nexus One and load a development ROM that has root access. This is encouraged by Google for people who wish to contribute to the Android Open Source Project. It is your phone and you can program it as you wish.
