We brought you news just over two months ago that Google was working on yet another project: Google TV. The early reports suggested that Google TV would be made up of a set-top box featuring Intel hardware and that Sony would be a partner in the project.

Well, today Google TV is now official. Like many consumer electronics platforms coming out of Google these days, Google TV is based on the Android platform. Google TV devices will use an Intel Atom CE4100 system-on-a-chip processor and can be used with any cable or satellite provider (Google is partnering with DISH Network though for the launch of Google TV).

Consumers will either be able to purchase a separate Google TV set-top box or a brand new TV that comes already equipped with Google TV technology.

Being that Google TV runs the Android operating system, it will have a full Chrome internet browser to surf the web on your 60" LED TV (naturally) along with support for Flash 10.1. Google TV will also support Amazon Video on Demand, YouTube, and Netflix. In addition, like smartphones running Android, Google TV will have access to the Android Marketplace and all the apps that come with it (specifically tailored for a large-screen experience).

The Official Google Blog has this to say about the navigation and search features of the new platform:

Google TV uses search to give you an easy and fast way to navigate to television channels, websites, apps, shows and movies. For example, already know the channel or program you want to watch? Just type in the name and you’re there. Want to check out that funny YouTube video on your 48” flat screen? It’s just a quick search away. If you know what you want to watch, but you’re not sure where to find it, just type in what you’re looking for and Google TV will help you find it on the web or on one of your many TV channels. If you’d rather browse than search, you can use your standard program guide, your DVR or the Google TV home screen, which provides quick access to all of your favorite entertainment so you’re always within reach of the content you love most.

Currently, Google has Sony -- with its "Sony Internet TV" coming this fall -- and Logitech signed as partners on the project, but we're sure that a whole slew of other third-parties will be lining up to lend Google a hand.
