Porsche's new Cayenne Hybrid generates 380hp

When we last visited Porsche's Cayenne S Hybrid SUV, the German automaker was finishing up road testing on prototypes. Today, however, Porsche is getting official with pricing for its large hybrid.

The new Cayenne S Hybrid will be priced from $67,770 -- this compares to a base MSRP of $46,700 for the standard entry-level Cayenne. The Cayenne S Hybrid uses the 3.0-liter supercharged V6 engine found in the Audi S4 which generates 333 hp. An electric motor generating 47 hp brings total system power for the parallel hybrid to 380 hp. Power is transmitted to all four wheels using an 8-speed Tiptronic S transmission.

Official U.S. fuel economy numbers have not yet been released for the Cayenne S Hybrid, but the vehicle achieves 28.68 mpg on the European cycle according to Porsche's German website. For comparison, the 400 hp, V8-powered Cayenne S achieves 22.4 mpg and the Cayenne Diesel (which is unlikely to come here) is rated at 31.79 mpg.

According to Porsche, the Cayenne S Hybrid is powerful enough to dash to 60 mph in just 6.1 seconds and has a top speed of 150 mph.

The latest Cayenne is 1.9 inches longer than its predecessor and rides on a 1.6-inch longer wheelbase. Also, depending on the trim level, the new Cayenne is up to 400 pounds lighter than the outgoing version.

Dual clutch transmissions are nothing but racing soul. I'm sick of the unfounded auto-enthusiast penchant for manual transmissions above all else - even high performance DSG - which has been standard in Formula 1 forever now.

I've threw the stick around for about a decade before recently going back to automatic trans (actually, a CVT). While I enjoyed how my previous cars' manual transmissions forced me to learn to feel/understand the engine more precisely, progress is progress. I also enjoy not having to worry about dos prompt text anymore in my operating system.

On the other hand, I completely agree with the cars losing their spirit based on form factor. 4 door Porsche FTL. If you want a people-mover, there are much better options for your dollar.

However, there's a vocal group out there that thinks if it doesn't have three pedals, it's crap.

Agreed. Manuals aren't the only way to go for performance cars, anymore. Furthermore, this thing is a Porsche primarily in name.

As an auto enthusiast and motorcyclist it's all about being one with the machine. It keeps your mind focused on the task at hand more so than letting the engine shift for you. That includes when stopping at a light, it can be convenient but overall I'd love to downshift it myself.

I think being "one with the machine" has more to do with state of mind than having certain equipment. As a big proponent of manual transmissions, dual clutch (DCT) and even the older sequential tranny's are NOT like your traditional slushboxes. Even your traditional slushboxes are MUCH better than years past (although you'll never see one in my car). My next car will have a DCT as I will still have control over shifts plus I'll have the benefit of superfast (no human can shift that fast) shifts. Browse youtube for comparisons between DCT and manual cars. DCT cars are just faster and more consistent. I'll gladly trade in my clutch pedal to gain these new benefits.
