Two groups see bright horizon for wireless standards in the household

The Wireless Gigabit Alliance and Wi-Fi Alliance have continued to woo new hardware manufacturers to adopt their wireless standards, with one format already claiming most of the Wi-Fi chip manufacturers are ready for future product launches.

The WiGig Alliance and Wi-Fi Alliance plan to work together to help accelerate multi-gigabit wireless networking standards for use in consumer products.

Both organizations plan to recruit D-Link, Linksys, and other networking companies to utilize their formats.  For example, the WiGig group noted its specifications allow for transfer speeds up to 10 times faster than 802.11n.  Dell and Cisco Systems recently joined the WiGig Alliance, with Apple expected to make a decision sometime in the future.

"When we launched the WiGig Alliance in May, we announced our plan to complete the industry’s first unified 60 GHz specification by Q4 2009, and we are proud to deliver on this promise to the industry,” noted Gigabit Alliance President Dr. Ali Sadri.

Late last year, the WiGig Alliance announced the completion of its new unified wireless specification that provided 7 Gbps maximum transfer speeds.

The new wireless standards promise significantly faster speeds, but it won't be until 2012 -- at the earliest -- whenWiGig products are available.  Furthermore, they'll have a short range, so WiGig will be ideal for consumers looking to stream content  into the living room, PC, or around the house.

"Spreading the rumors, it's very easy because the people who write about Apple want that story, and you can claim its credible because you spoke to someone at Apple." -- Investment guru Jim Cramer
