Apple CEO Steve Jobs says that Android is a "porn phone" OS and that his company is far more chaste.   (Source: Trek BBS)
Group says that Apple has shown itself to be the champion of chastity

Early this year Apple purged the app store of all that was lude and lascivious, claiming that it was merely bowing to the complaints of parents.  Maybe it was halfway right.  The Parents Television Council has gone public, claiming that its protest campaign helped spur Apple to action and praising the company's new moral stand.

The PTC says that Apple's decision to block photos of apps based on their parental control settings and remove some apps altogether is a good step.  The group's president, Tim Winter, says Apple is definitely rubbing him the right way.  He states, "Apple has taken a positive first step towards eliminating kids' access to sexually explicit and pornographic content on its product lineup and we applaud the company’s effort."

However, the PTC has identified a new target: Google's Android operating system.  Android is set to pass Microsoft sometime this quarter in the smartphone arena, and will soon be the third largest smartphone OS provider.  It has the second biggest app store, after only Apple's 150,000+ apps – the Android Marketplace features over 40,000 apps.

A handful of those apps are pornographic or otherwise deviant in nature.  The PTC is vowing to do its best to let Google know that they're being very naughty and to whack the explicit content off the Android Market.

The group is upset that Android OS has no parental controls and hasn't taken steps to remove preview photos or explicit apps like Apple.  States PTC's national grassroots director Gavin McKiernan, "We plan to draw attention to other platforms, such as Android, or Verizon's Vcast service, that aren't really doing anything.  We definitely want to see progress from some of the other handheld devices."

Steve Jobs, Apple CEO, agrees with the assessment that Android is very, very naughty.  He became rather hot and bothered when discussing Android at the iPhone OS 4.0 launch event and accused his competitor of being a "porn phone".  His company and users, are much better at keeping their dark, unpure thoughts in check, he feels.

I agree that they should have included an option for the phones that allow the parent to lock mature content on the phone. But at the same time, why are parents buying Android phones for their kids?

It's irresponsible of Google to not put some sort of lock/age verification on the phone, but equally as irresponsible for parents to hand over these phones to their kids and not be aware of what they can/can not do and make their purchasing choices exactly (especially if they're for YOUNG kids).

They way they act it's like they're giving smart phones to their 10 year olds and sending them on their way.

There are a lot of families out there with the money and/or credit to spoil their kids. Every kid when they are in the teen years would love to have a newest and greatest phone to show off and their are plenty of parents willing to splurge on their kids. In the end parental controls should have been an obvious addition, though.

Kids have no business having a phone. None. If they have something important to say, they should be free to say it to their friends over their parents supervised landline. Kids aren't high-powered business people and when they are in school, they should be focused on learning and personal interaction, not texting in class or surfing websites.

Which is more likely, a ten year old kid going on to the app store to find a pornographic app (which probably costs money and will show up on parents' credit card statement) or a kid going online to look at the almost literally endless amounts of free porn available there.

I don't see how Apple can be considered 'chaste' when their web browser is the portal to all that is (in their opinion) evil and dangerous in the world.

Give it up, we know who you are and it's sad that DT resorts to this kind of foolishness.

I'm pretty sure reader1 just posts to get reactions. That's the only logical reason for reader1's level of retardation.

Yes, damn those porn sites and the 100 billion dollars a year in revenue they bring in worldwide.. Apple can't stop human nature and they surely can't stop such a lucrative market.. sorry to burst your bubble.

Indeed and not to mention some sites are even built for and with the iPhone in mind. Take youporn mobile for instance.

reader1 and DT community would miss each other too much, so I guess there would be at least one Apple fan around.

I'm no fan of Apple by far, but parental controls are not entirely a bad thing. However, any kid with access to the internet knows how to get his porn from 4chan or torrents with minimal effort. It's easy to get around whatever blocks can be implemented, but "parental controls" aren't a bad thing entirely.

Granted, I feel the parents buying their kids smart phones and expecting them never to Google "boobies" are the real problem. They're not searching for birds.

i think you, and msot other users, are very clear thinking people, and you've all got the nail on the head. since when did parents get to have an excuse for child neglect? i was not allowed unsupervised use of the internet until well, 15 maybe? i know parents's who'll plonk their kid on the internet and wander off into the house to gossip etc, now they're giving them phones to do the same and wondering. it's ridiculous

It is almost as if Jobs is admitting that the iPhone is a kid's toy. Safe for kids! Fun! No sharp edges or small pieces! Rated G for everyone!

As for me, I'd be more interested in a "porn-phone".

Android OS writers to Steve Jobs: "Hey, it's a FEATURE!!" ;)

I'm not in favor of giving a phone to kids until they're old enough to be responsible for them, but that's just me. But regardless of how rich (or foolish) a parent is, there's no reason in the world why a kid needs a smart phone.
