Obama expects to be around to see man walk on Mars

The U.S. manned space flight programs were dealt a serious blow when Obama announced plans to go back to the moon were being shelved due to budget cuts and cost overruns. The budget cuts meant that the Constellation program would be cancelled.

The outcry against the President's plan was swift from space program supporters and NASA. Obama quickly began to take steps to alter his plans and called for the Orion crew module originally planned as the shuttle replacement to be scaled back and used as a lifeboat for the ISS. Obama had announced that he would talk about his plans for NASA and the space program in Florida earlier this week.

Obama has now aired his plans, clarifying some points and helping to dress wounds caused when he originally announced his plans for NASA. Obama's plan still calls for a scaled back Constellation program that would see the program continue, but only as a shadow of its former self. The changes still mean thousands in the space industry will be left jobless.

The shuttle fleet is set to retire this year with only three more scheduled flights remaining for the fleet with the last scheduled for September. Obama has promised additional funds to allow NASA padding if a launch has to be rescheduled due to weather. Some hope that the extra funds can instead be used to fund an extra mission.

Once the shuttle fleet is retired, getting astronauts to and from the ISS will be left to the Russian Soyuz spacecraft at a cost of about $50 million per round trip.

Obama sees the future of U.S. space flight in the hands of private companies. Obama wants a new industry that will see private companies offering transportation services to NASA rather than the vehicles themselves.

Obama said, "The new plan is to harness our nation's unparalleled system of free enterprise (as we have done in all other modes of transport), to create far more reliable and affordable rockets."

San Francisco Chronicle reports that Obama foresees manned missions to near Earth asteroids and perhaps even Mars in his lifetime.

Obama said, "[By 2025 the U.S. will have a new spacecraft] designed for long journeys to allow us to begin the first-ever crewed missions beyond the moon into deep space." He continued saying, "We'll start by sending astronauts to an asteroid for the first time in history," he said. "By the mid-2030s, I believe we can send humans to orbit Mars and return them safely to Earth. And a landing on Mars will follow. And I expect to be around to see it."

Obama said of a return trip to the moon, "We've been there before." Obama's plans for the space program still need the approval of Congress. Many lawmakers still plan to fight to keep the jobs that Obama's new budget will cut in their home districts. Obama's plans would see 2,500 jobs added in the Florida "Space Coast" by 2012. Thousands will still be unemployed due to the budget cuts.

Obama has never flip flopped on NASA programs... He has always hated the space program with a passion. He has flip flopped on his words because he understand he just lost poll points, voters and supporters. So, he comes out with a recover statement that when you review what he says, actually says nothing at all. For years I have warned people. Obama is a tool, he just wants the job for power and money. He never plans to do what is good for the country, or what the people need or want... Just what he wants for his personal reasons. As I live in IL. a state that has dealt with this idiot for over ten years, I have suffered enough. Think about this: IL. one of the largest states population wise, not bad on land size either. IL. one of the top income earning states per household. IL. is the highest taxed state (overall). Therefore bring in the most amount of money from taxes. So why do we have some much financial issues?? Why is Illinois almost bankrupt? Because the Democratic party has control this state for well over 60 years and they keep putting people like Obama in control. Illinois the best state in the union to demonstrate corruption at it's fullest. Illinois, a state where it's not uncommon to see Governors in Control one day and then in jail the next... No, Rod is not our first, far, far, from it. We have put many Governors in jail.

I just hope you all remember this during the next election...

RE: A little flip floppy, but I somewhat agree.

It's sure starting to look like he's brought Chicago style politics to the national level, which is not what we need. Like if your district supports him then there are all sorts of new gov't programs heading your way... green jobs, health care jobs, a new Gitmo jail, etc. If your against him then you are getting cut. In my area he has very little support... Huntville, AL will probably be one of the biggest losers in this new NASA strategy. Huntsville had been one of the bright spots in a state that was hit harder than most... so much for that. Problem is that even if new programs are implimented in the next admin, all the rocket scientists have already lost their jobs and that experience cannot be regained quickly. President O is alienating independents, moderates, and employed people so fast that I believe that he'll be a closing in on lame duck status by this time next year.

On the topic of Huntsville, you're missing MR Obama's cunning plan:

As far as I recall, large chunks of the Israeli Arrow BMD are being integrated at the Boeing facility in Huntsville, AL.
Now, given the huge success MR Obama had in stopping the Iranian nuclear weapon program (...), we (as in Israel) will most likely need far more Arrow missiles, which should offset the unemployment caused by MR O's brand new "vision". Problem solved!
Better yet, who knows! As the Iranian missile technology advances (in an effort to out run the Arrow III BMD), they will most likely produce better/cheaper boosters, which the US private sector * can use to send people into low orbit. Problem solved yet again!

300M people and voted Obama into office. *Sigh*
