International customers awaiting the iPad will have to wait a little longer

Apple sold 300,000 iPads on launch day. By the first week, Apple had sold more than 450,000 of the devices. We are now learning today that the iPad continues to be a big seller in the U.S. with Apple having delivered 500,000 iPads to date.

However, that strong initial showing for the iPad here in the States means that the international launch is being pushed back. "Faced with this surprisingly strong U.S. demand, we have made the difficult decision to postpone the international launch of iPad by one month, until the end of May," said Apple in a press release. "We will announce international pricing and begin taking online pre-orders on Monday, May 10."

The Cupertino-based company went on to brag about the sales success of the iPad in typical Apple fashion. "We know that many international customers waiting to buy an iPad will be disappointed by this news, but we hope they will be pleased to learn the reason—the iPad is a runaway success in the U.S. thus far."

While Apple definitely has a leg up on the competition at the moment, there are new devices waiting in the wings. HP will soon launch its Slate which is a tablet based on Windows 7 and Google is currently developing an Android-based tablet.

At this rate, it will crush the Iphone and Droid sales to the 1 millions unit time frame of 72 days.

Am I the only one here who smells marketing spin? Other web sites mention that iPads are easily obtainable all across the country i.e. there is no "shortage."

Could it be that Apple is simply dressing up a pig and calling it a pony? That maybe they are shocked at the lack of sellout and the rumored high return rate? Look at it this way: do you believe that if sales WERE less than expected, Apple would actually come out and say, "We are disappointed in the current sales rate of the iPad, and will be evaluating what modifications might be needed in order to better meet the needs of our customers?" I don't think so. Apple is the undisputed king of spin.

Hey, I've been wrong before, but in my view the iPad is a product with substantial built-in limitations. I personally have little interest in getting one. It will be fascinating to see what the real story is over the next few months.

I agree that it is a marketing spin to announce that you cannot meet the demand for your product. I think that MS did this with the ZuneHD, so it must be common place. I dont think Apple is lying about the sales figures. Apples stock is soaring on all of this news, so for them to lie about the sales figures would be a major trust (and legal) issue with investors and outside analysts.
People are speculating but no one really knows how it will do. If it sells great, good for Apple. If not, oh well. Apple has had their share of loser products over the years. If it spurs competition for good, cheap products, its all good in my book. I dont like Steve Jobs, but you have to admire the guy. He lights a fire under the industry- and thats what "we" need.

nope, its all B.S. i can walk into any best buy or apple store around here, and pick up a dozen, and talking to any of them they all say its not selling that well. The sales numbers are consistently changing. there was even a few web sites that posted over 100k have been returned, due to over heating and wifi problems, but if you went to any of those web sites today, you get the Error 404 page, basically saying "heres some money take the page down" ....wouldn't be supprised if they're counting sales numbers as how many left the warehouse not actually sold.......
