The HTC Incredible looks to take on the iPhones and Blackberries in the battle for smart phone dominance

DailyTech previously reported that Verizon stores should soon be getting shipments of HTC's latest and greatest Android smartphone, the Incredible.  Now more leaks reinforce the tip we got from Verizon techs.  AndroidForums has posted a leaked manual and the forum also has a post showing the HTC Incredible in Verizon's CellBrite machine, which transfers phone numbers between handsets.

The HTC Incredible brings some powerful hardware to America's largest network, Verizon, and should help Android continue its campaign of rampant growth.

The phone, according to the manual and multiple sources, packs a 1 GHz Snapdragon processor from Qualcomm and is powered by Google's multi-touch and multitasking capable Android 2.1 OS.  The phone will have an 8-megapixel camera with autofocus and dual LED flash.  It offers 8 GB of internal memory, but one-ups the iPhone by offering up to 32 GB of swappable microSD storage.

There's support for push email via Gmail and Microsoft Exchange, support for Flash Lite 4.0 (with Flash 10.1 support coming soon), and access to the Android Marketplace's 42,000+ apps.

The phone reportedly measures 117.5 mm (4.63 in) (h) x 58.5 mm (2.30 in) (w) x 11.9 mm (0.47 in) (d), and weighs 130 g (4.59 oz).  To put that in perspective, the iPhone is slightly thicker and heavier, coming in at 115.5 mm (4.55 in) (h) x 62.1 mm (2.44 in) (w) x 12.3 mm (0.48 in) (d), and 135 g (4.8 oz).

Despite its sleek footprint, it still manages to pack an ample 480 × 800 pixel, 3.7-in. WVGA AMOLED display.

For now the HTC Incredible may enjoy a short run as the top handset in the market in terms of hardware.  The fourth generation iPhone, coming this summer (likely on June 22) is expected to fall close to the Incredible in terms of hardware.  Its rumored to pack a higher resolution screen, a faster processor and more.  Ultimately, the phones will likely be pretty evenly matched, with each having some minor advantages.  However, HTC's Incredible will likely have one major advantage over the iPhone 4 -- it will be released two months earlier.

Apple is obviously pretty nervous about the HTC's Android army -- the Nexus One, Hero, and Incredible.  It has filed a lawsuit claiming HTC ripped off over 20 of its iPhone patents.  It is trying to block all imports and sales of HTC Android handsets in the U.S., an ambitious, but unlikely legal goal.

The Samsung Galaxy S is a very worthy competitor though.

It also packs a 1Ghz CPU, apparently the same one as that used in the iPad. So the GPU on that is better. The Galaxy S also has a Super AMOLED screen, and I owned a phone like that before (Samsung Omnia II). An AMOLED screen has no competition, so it's a bit strange that the Incredible lacks an AMOLED screen while the Nexus One does. One problem I can see with the Samsung is that Samsung's software support has always been rather week.

Ummm... am I missing something, or are you?

Hey no worries, was just wondering. The AMOLED screens are amazing and I would be surprised if HTC overlooked this as a feature on something they are calling 'Incredible'. :)

Sorry if I had caused any confusion. Anyway I did a quick Google search for "HTC Incredible AMOLED" and it's more likely than not that it will have an AMOLED screen. :)

Even if it does not have that, I think the Google Nexus One is pretty close in specs. :p

Actually according to the leaked user manual (which was leaked a few days ago), it will have an 3.7 inch AMOLED screen.

Really I don't care if its AMOLED or not, if its only a 16bit display like the Nexus One, its a big fail in my books. Furthermore anyone who thinks the Nexus One has even close to good color reproduction must be in a trance because of the bleeding colors, and ultra high brightness=P. Only reason I have not bought one already, was going to until I compared the screen to my Palm Pre which has a very nice 24bit LCD display with very good colors and not intense brightness ala N1..

In other words, it won't be incredible at all, if it sports the same screen as the N1.. Its just no acceptable for a high end device like the N1 (or this) to have a 16bit display.. which are easily beat out by their 24bit LCD counterparts in terms of color reproduction.

If you're looking for professional color reproduction I suggest you buy a good laptop instead of a phone...

The 16bit aspect of the N1 AMOLED display isn't the problem, its the technical challenges inherent in the AMOLED technology which are compensated by over-saturated reds and blues. They of course do not "bleed" as you suggest. I own a Nexus One and think its benefits greatly outweigh its deficits.

Oh, and I'm not running Photoshop on it because that would be ridiculous.

If they did go with a normal LCD; availability would be the most likely reason. A few months ago when an amoled iPad screen rumor appeared someone found production rate/availability data for amoled screens. At the time couldn't keep up with the total demand for the few phones using them at the time; and total production was well short of what would have been needed for a mass market device like the ipad, or even just the iphone. I'm curious if production has ramped enough since for the new iPhone to use one or if the screen will remain an advantage for lower volume high end Android phones.

Yup that's the big caveat of AMOLED panels in cell phones.

Regardless, many high end smartphones will probably begin moving to the technology.

Yeah, my HTC Desire struggles in sunshine even here in the UK, but it's not that bad really, compared to other phones I have used, they all seem to struggle to some extent.

Such a shame about the X10, a missed opportunity. I used to love SE's work, now they always seem to be scrabbling to catch up and never quite making it.

Why is it missed? They will update it to 2.1 but other than geeks it really does not matter and their custom UI looks amazing (Timescape, Mediascape) especially when a comprehensive media manager is sorely missing on Android.

Choosing a capacitive touch-screen that doesn't support multi-touch was a bit of an oversight.

Sure, it will upgrade to 2.1, eventually, but when? Who knows? The thing is there are lots of other phones out there with 2.1 already. When they do update who's to say what else will be out there by then, and they'll still be playing catchup.

I'm not saying that it's a bad phone, but why have they not given it a multi-touch screen and why the delay in 2.1? They are lagging behind. Time-scape is fine, but really it's just papering over the cracks left by the poor hardware choices made by Sony, and they charge you extra for it too.

Have to agree about Samsung's software. I have a Samsung phone with several obvious bugs which have never/will never be fixed. Probably won't buy another one.

Most annoying bugs:
1. if I call someone, get their voicemail and they call me while I am leaving a message I can't pick up their call or hang up on the vm - phone basically locks up.
2. if someone (A) texts me and I don't reply to that text when I try to send a new text to someone else (B) it sends it to the original (A)
3. if I am writing a text message and someone texts me my message is dumped

There are several others that should have never got past QA, but those are the most annoying.
