Hyundai drops a few bombs on the midsize sedan market

Hyundai is continuing its steady stream of product updates with two more iterations of the all-new Sonata. We've already discussed the Sonata on a few occasions here on DailyTech, but Hyundai today released official details on both the new Sonata Hybrid and the Sonata Turbo.

First up is the new Sonata Hybrid. The new hybrid features revised front and rear bodywork to make it stand apart from the standard Sonata models. The body revisions also help the Sonata Hybrid to better slip through the air.

Most importantly, however, is the new Hyundai "Hybrid Blue Drive" powertrain. A 169 hp, 2.4-liter four cylinder engine is paired with a 40 hp electric motor and a lithium-ion battery pack. The Sonata Hybrid eschews the continuously variable transmission (CVT) that is typically used in hybrid vehicles and instead uses a more traditional six-speed automatic transmission.

When all is said and done, the 3,457-pound Sonata Hybrid (263 pounds lighter than the Ford Fusion Hybrid) is able to achieve city fuel economy of 37 mpg and highway fuel economy of 39 mpg. For comparison, the Ford Fusion Hybrid achieves figures of 41 mpg and 36 mpg respectively.

The other big news from Hyundai is the announcement of the Sonata Turbo. We've previously discussed that Hyundai has done away with a V6 engine option for the all-new Sonata. Following the announcement of Sonata Turbo, we can see why. The Sonata Turbo uses a new 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine which develops an impressive 274 hp and 269 lb-ft of torque (maximum torque is achieved at a low 1,800 rpm) -- all while using regular unleaded gasoline.

Even more embarrassing for its V6-powered competitors like Toyota Camry, Ford Fusion, and Honda Accord is the fact that the tiny little turbo four surpasses all of them in horsepower and torque figures. The Sonata Turbo will also delivery fuel economy of 22 mpg city and 34 mpg highway -- not far off from the standard 198 hp Sonata. For comparison, the closest V6 competitor to the Sonata Turbo in fuel economy is the Honda Accord V6 which is rated at 19 mpg city and 29 mpg highway.

With these two announcements, Hyundai appears to be having no problem at all moving towards the governments goal of increased fuel efficiency for passenger vehicles.

When are they gonna put that 274 hp turbo 4 into the Genesis Coupe to replace the weaksauce 2.0 turbo in there now? :-)

The Genesis Coupe is more like a poor man's G37 since it has four seats. The 370Z only has two.

That being said, the Genesis Coupe starts at $22,000 and the 370Z starts at $30,000 -- not even in the same ballpark.

Hmm, I thought the Genesis coupe WAS the replacement for the Tiburon. That Veloster looks more like a crossover style to me, tough to tell with the camouflage though.

No, the Genesis Coupe is its own seperate RWD line. The FWD Tiburon is being replaced by the FWD Veloster. You can see pics of the concept in the second link I posted. It's clearly not a crossover.

Edmunds compared the 2009 370Z and the 2010 Mustang GT and had this to say:

The 3,572-pound Mustang is still geared too tall. This dulls the V8's snappiness, an impression exacerbated by the Mustang's overly soft engine mounts. As a result, driveline lash is a companion at low speeds. Pay close attention and you can also feel the powertrain lurching about during quick transient handling maneuvers, such as rapid lane changes. With that said, the Mustang's initial turn into a corner is immediate, almost disconcertingly so since the steering is lifeless and doesn't build effort commensurate with the movements of the chassis. The new car is an improvement over previous Mustangs, but it doesn't hold a candle to the way the 2009 Nissan 370Z responds to steering inputs.

The review is of the 2010 Mustang GT. The person you're responding to is talking about the 2011 Mustang GT which has the new 5.0 liter V8 and should kick 370Z ass.

Not to mention, the report of the 2011 GT with Track Pack lapping Gingerman at the same time as the M3!!!! IDK man but that just might make up for the lack of IRS.

But the point of his quote from the article is also that the handling is very unrefined - a classic characteristic of the american muscle car... which many people simply cannot look past.

The mustang is a joke as far as sports cars go. Half is performance, the other half is feel, both of which the mustang has none. The suspension is soft and antiquated, and until the 2011 model, so was the engine. If you have to buy a mustang either get a classic one where all of those shortcomings were acceptable back then, or get a Roush where they solved all of those problems. A stage 3 can beat a GT500 around a track easy and has much less power.

IMO the genesis coupe is badass, it nips as the Z heels and gives Hyundai a real rwd sports car, something that the Tiby never was. Not to mention that almost all reviews about it are glowing, the v6 is a sure thing and it handles as sports cars should.

Wouldn't that kill sales of their V6 variant, especially given the potential fuel economy gains? I'm guessing they'll put it in there when they drop the 6 cylinder, perhaps at the next redesign. Or else they'll beef up the V6 too, and sell them side by side - possibly dropping the 4.6L?

Anyway looking at this turbo'd 2.0, it seems kind of like they took the LNF design and improved on it a bit. I hope it's as durable.

The 3.8 V6 is rumored to get direct injection which would push HP from 306 to around 350+. That would leave plenty of distance between it and the Turbo 4. Both powertrains should show up for the '12 refresh.

Interesting. Where does that leave the 4.6L? They'll have to do some major shuffling. I hope they're not just piling engines out the door. Granted its easier for them to do stuff like this, since they're a smaller, more nimble company, compared to some of the "big dogs" on the block.

Well, Hyundai says that it won't use the V8 in the Genesis Coupe anyway, so you can disregard it.

However, Hyundai is supposedly working on a 5.0-liter version of the 4.6-liter Tau V8 used in the Genesis Sedan which should be good for 400+ HP. The 4.6 currently produces 368 hp.
