Porsche 918 Spyder Concept
Porsche really wants to build the 918, however, the company insists that it doesn't want to lose money on the vehicle.

Reaction to Porsche's 918 Spyder plug-in hybrid concept was overwhelmingly positive when it was unveiled last week at the Geneva auto show -- its sleek lines and impressive hybrid powertrain won over those who have been critical of Porsche's somewhat "stagnant" design philosophy and even those who turn up their noses at hybrid vehicles.

According to AutoCar, the people within Porsche love the vehicle as well, and they want to build it. The 918 Spyder would be made as the new "halo" vehicle for the automaker -- a distinction that was recently bestowed upon the Porsche Carrera GT. The $440,000+ Carrera GT weighs 3,000 pounds, gets its motivation from a 5.5-liter V10 which develops 605 hp, and can scoot to 60 mph in around three and a half seconds.

The 918, on the other hand, is powered by a 3.4-liter V8 engine which produces 500 hp. Two electric motors bring the total combined horsepower of the vehicle to 718 hp. All of that power is harnessed within a roadster that weighs just under 3,300 pounds.

"There is no one inside Porsche who doesn't want to build the 918," said Porsche CEO Michael Macht to AutoCar. "The response has been marvelous; we will ask buyers to sign letters of intent."

Macht went on to add, "The 918 Spyder provides the answer to whether there can be high-performance cars in the future. Many have said they are finished. This car shows they are not."

If the 918 Spyder does make it to production, it will arrive within the next five years according to company insiders (the Porsche Carrera GT was shown in concept form in 2000 and entered production four years later). Given the technology that is crammed into the 918 Spyder, it wouldn't be surprising if its price tag far surpassed that of the Carrera GT.

Porsche is determined to not lose money on its next halo vehicle, unlike Toyota with its ultra-exotic Lexus LFA supercar. The 552 hp LFA is a priced at a whopping $375,000 USD – however, at that price, Toyota is still losing money on every one it produces.

Hey, if I had the money, I'd do it too. If I'm a flippin' millionaire, I sure as hell am not gonna be riding around in a Passat.

I'd have a Porsche Cayenne for grocery trips or treks to Home Depot, an Aston Martin Rapide if I needed a long distance highway cruiser, and a Ferrari/Lamborghini/Porsche for everything in between.

Who gives a *&^@ about "practical" when you have money? :-)

I'm not a Cayenne lover myself but to each his own. Personally, a 2010 Bentley Continental Supersports would be my personal beater, a 2010 911 Turbo Cab would fill the sporting duties, my present 06 Ford F250 already fills the Home Depot role and if I had stupid cash, a Lambo Gallardo LP560-4 (replete with Underground Racing goodness) would be the fair weather fun ride/I think I just sh!t myself-mobile.

A lot of people actually do. Steve Jobs drives a nice MB, not some exotic Italian shmug. A ton of other billionaires drive Lexus/MB/Infinity/Prius/Saab or some electric like Tesla. I mean, if you're a young boy and want fresh chick every night then yeah, but real rich people and industry moguls are not that kind.

I could point you to Bill Gates and his Porsche 959 (which I think is finally released from U.S customs) -- more recently, he had a Porsche 996 Cabriolet IIRC.

It's nearly every young boys fantasy to have a Ferrari or Porsche Lamborghini when they get older (and if they have the means). What's wrong with that?

Who am I to say what a millionaire should or shouldn't do with his/her money?

Well...sort of. It is ridiculously loud, even inside the cabin, so loud in fact that conversations among passengers isn't possible at idle...

Other than that yeah it's awesome. Problem is you will never ever really be able to have tons of fun in it, and even at the track the threat of crashing it will force you to hold back a little or even a lot to prevent such...

Let me add... you just mentioned the Tesla which itself is a $100,000+ two-seat roadster ($130,000+ in Sport trim). Surely that isn't "practical"? ;-) And it's electric too... isn't that the definition of "smug" if I want to use your wording? :)

Why does the Tesla get a pass and not something like a Porsche 911 Turbo or an Audi R8 or a Ferrari F430?

Modern "ancient" ICE sports cars can maintain their high performance easily over a 100+ mile range, whilst your Tesla will easily run out of juice <100 miles (when driven aggressively) requiring a 3+ hour recharge. Meanwhile your Porsche/Ferrari needs a 5 min fill-up at your gas station.

Horses were running faster than the first ICE cars too :P

Nuclear or hybrid nuclear/thermonuclear power coupled with next gen nanotech Lithium batteries easily pwn ICE efficiency/emission/maintenance wise.

All of that is non obvious for old ICE holdouts like you but industry progresses in a right direction no matter what you holdouts cry :P Hybrids/electrics are just an early first sign.

You obviously haven't driven a high HP car, leave alone a high HP sports car. Its not about the speed you can reach. it is about the feel and agility even when accelerating from 0 - 30 kmph or turning a bend.

All these months of car analogy while talking Apple, and you fail posting on a car related blog. Bizarre!

Technically, that's not accurate. What you're describing is putting vinyl stickers and an addon tail to a reasonably high performance car. While the stickers may look cool (to some people), and the cool looking tail my seem like it makes the car faster, the reality is that the car won't perform any better.

The Ferrari does, in fact, perform better than a significant number of other automobiles, at least in terms of speed and handling. Battery life^?^?^?^?^?^?^?^?^?^?^?^?Fuel Economy of that Ferrari is, of course, terrible.

Yeah, from the point of view of a car nut who ejaculates when looking at shiny Brembo brakes or something you're right, but I wasn't talking about these few.

Toyota drivers aren't buying crazy cars designed to go 5x the speed limit, faster than an aeroplane. Toyota drivers buy sensible cars that may go somewhat above speed limit but why wasting money on an engine power you'll never draw more than 20% from?

In other words, would you like to buy a mansion with 100 rooms to live there alone? Just for the heck of it? Even though 99 rooms will always be empty and covered with dust? If yes - you are a mansion nut and all car nuts are your friends, and you won't understand me and other normal people.

Again, to make myself totally clear: I'm not talking about hobbysts and such, these are different story.

But that is exactly who cars like this are targeted for. They don't build them for the average person. They build them for people with huge amounts of disposable income, to own a piece of machinery that excites them. We all have our passions. For some that is a Porsche, for others its a Mac. Go figure.

Personally I love bikes (bicycles, before you ask), I have bikes that are way better than I can ride, but its fun to own them, ride them, they feel better and I get enjoyment out of that. Nothing wrong with owning something because you want it, even if it isn't ideal.

I would also like to point out that you want the industry to move forward, and this is a hybrid, moving int he right direction I would think, yet it gets derided for being over powered much like the Tesla is.

I didn't say ou needed it. I just said it was fun. I like the acceleration. I don't care about going over the speed limit, I just like getting there. I drive a Nissan Altima 2.5S, nothing fancy in the least but it still gives me great acceleration, even though I wish I had a Saleen S7.

Now you contradict yourself 'cause if you really loved acceleration on the cheap you'd get Impreza WRX, its turbo + AWD will blow your Altima away. I don't think anything comes close to WRX's acceleration in the same price range.

I hate hatchbacks. If they made a Saleen S7 in hatchback form and then tried to give me one, I'd consider it very heavily first. Just my preference. That and the Altima seemed like a "nicer" car to me. I like the feel of the seats, I love the materials, I like the sound system, it came with a sunroof and all kinds of upgrades and still ended up being much cheaper than the WRX. Not to mention, 6 speed manual vs 5 makes for a much smoother drive. My only complaint about my Altima is the orange lights in the cockpit. And the fact that it's FWD.
