Windows Mobile 7 home screen  (Source:
WinMo7 interface leaks early

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer is scheduled to make a keynote address today at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) to announce its next generation mobile operating system. While that keynote address is still roughly two hours away, shots of the Windows Mobile 7 interface have leaked onto the web.

Engadget was able to score some images of the interface courtesy of learnbemobile. Interestingly, the shots were gleamed from banners posted on the walls in the convention center.

From the shots available, we can see that Microsoft has taken a very simplified approach to what appears to be the main home screen for the operating system. Whereas the iPhone OS is littered with icons on its home page (twenty icons including four on the dock for Phone, Mail, Safari, and iPod), Windows Phone 7 Series has icons for Phone, Text Messaging, Email, Facebook, Pictures, Xbox Live, and "Me".

The unannounced phone itself appears to have a Home button which is flanked by a "Back" button and what appears to be a "Search" button.

Stay tuned as we bring you more detail on Microsoft's latest initiative to battle the iPhone OS and Android.

I never jump into an Apple M$ fight because usually it is very one sided in Microsoft's favor (As it should be. I love Windows, cause lets face it, it's King!). But I've owned 3 WinMo phones, the first being the MPX200, up to Blackjack II. I now own an iPhone and you would have to pry it from my cold dead hands.

Are you really arguing the iPhone has more/better apps than Windows Mobile? There are hundreds of times the number of apps on Windows Mobile (although not all of those are good). It's a heck of a lot easier to program for and a lot less constrained, plus the platform has been around a lot longer.

And to hammer this in more WinMo wins on apps for one simple reason. Opera Mobile (not mini, which Opera has ported to iPhone but can't sell) which includes flash support. That's right, full Opera with flash support.

As a follow-up, I didn't mean to say that I think Windows Mobile is perfect. Just on the question of applications that iPhone still has a long way to go to catch up. Microsoft has a lot of work to do to make main interface more useful and efficient. Maybe 7 will help, who knows at this point.
