New service ties together variety of Google and external offerings to make a social network/RSS feed hybrid
Somewhere Mark Zuckerberg must be angrily screaming, because Google just stepped all over his company's toes. Google,
its web arsenal which has helped make it the world's largest search provider and the largest internet company, has unveiled a new service called Google Buzz, which is creating quite the... well... buzz.
The new Google service ties together Google's Picasa and Gmail along with
and Flickr to create essentially a feed driven social network of sorts -- with the feed bearing some similarities to the feed that has helped Facebook become the world's largest social network.
The newly unveiled service is available in both mobile handset and PC forms and is easily accessible by any of Google's millions of Gmail users. The service offers some key advantages over Facebook -- its apparent closest rival. Unlike Facebook's static email updates, the new service will provide dynamic updates through your Gmail. And Google is also promising to do a
better job that Facebook
when it comes to making it clear what you're sharing with whom.
Some might worry about handing Google more personal data than it already has, but let's face it, Google probably knows plenty about you already. For those willing to take the plunge, the services is available on Android and iPhone browsers through Google.com or directly
(more details are available via the link).
While Google isn't likely to displace Facebook anytime soon, Google Buzz seems to have the potential to perhaps steal away more than a few Facebook users who are looking for an easy, less intrusive alternative to the ubiquitous social network.

RE: Critical mass achieved

One day several years ago I was, for the millionth time, told I HAD to make a facebook or myspace page. "EVERYONE'S ON THERE!" was the battlecry. Up until that day I was an avid PC and internet user, logging plenty of days worth of time using AIM and Kazaa (or maybe bittorrent was around by then), and the average person probably paled in comparison to my knowledge on computer related applications and goings-on.
Eventually I did make a facebook page. But it was that day that I realized that by not wanting to make one and scoffing at those who did that I had, in fact, become that old guy who doesn't understand the appeal of chatrooms and AIM because he can "just talk to my friends in person."

I'm the type of guy who likes to remain a ghost but when I kept coming in contact with people I knew from high school, old friends and current college buddies they tell me they can't really talk or hang out much because of work schedules and told me to hit them up on FB if they don't answer their texts.
I didn't even create a FB page until late 2005 and only started really utilizing it in mid 2006. I avoid MySpace because of all the annoying pages I've come across and I'm only on Twitter as part of those cheap air fares things from United and Jet Blue.
