CEA President Gary Shapiro says the government is silencing innovation

The Obama administration has already had a profound impact on technology.  From charging Intel with antitrust violations to taking majority ownership of GM and Chrysler, the administration's actions have profoundly affected the tech landscape.  And as new decisions, such as the proposed ACTA treaty and Copenhagen climate promises loom, the Obama administration is a hot topic at the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show.

Obama's Chief Technology Officer Aneesh Chopra was in Las Vegas yesterday, but received a rather icy welcome from Consumer Electronics Association President Gary Shapiro, who admonished the Obama administration's approach on many topics.

He offered mild criticism of the bailout of the financial and auto sectors, which he called "panic spending".  And he stated, "When it comes to innovation, there's a lot the government can do, and there's a lot they should not do.  The government doesn't spur innovation or entrepreneurship. The government often gets in the way."

Mr. Shapiro complains that the Obama administration isn't doing enough to make sure that the U.S.'s trade policy allows our goods to compete with cheaper goods elsewhere.  He also complains that they are dragging their feet about implementing measures to allow the faster transfer of tech savvy workers from nations like China and India.

An apologetic Chopra commented, "We have to eat our own dogfood.  Gary is right about the federal deficit. We are in an economic crisis but we are going to tackle it. We have to get it right."

Mr. Chopra is a graduate of John Hopkins and worked in government and as the managing director at a health think tank before taking on the role of government CTO.  The tech industry's leadership has thus far been rather mixed in their opinions on his leadership and that of the Obama administration.

Liberals stifle innovation and technological progress like no group. The other day they closed a science program at a school simply because black students were doing poorly. Now the entire school, which is mostly funded by white families, has no science program. There are many other examples like this in science like how they deny evidence just because it isn't convenient and such. Liberals are the worst.

Its simple conservatives have no heart and liberals have no balls , but like it or not we are all Americans and we need to stop all this bullshit and work together because the rest of the world is set to eclipse us while we fight amongst ourselves about the moral authority or whose dick is bigger. Both sides have thier merits and weakness but neither alone is set to rule.

The real problem imo is a broken govt system that allows a few to control and set agenda for the whole, if ordinary citizens had powerful lobbyist groups to represent us we might get something done instead of believing that the elected officials have any loyalty to us the people not the corporations and special interest groups that pay to get them elected.

And on another tangent fucking banks suck and they own our govt ( senate ) real banking reform should be at the top of the list.

"Having a heart" for a liberal means using someone else's money to make people comfortable in their poverty. Next to killing, enslaving, and torturing, that's about the worst thing to do to a person.

But if you don't REASON it out, it FEELS good. Liberalism is a juvenile philosophy which ignores human nature and motivation for the sake of chasing a false moral superiority.

By the time you're 40, you'll likely have realized all this. The problem is all the voting you'll do until then.

I'd like to learn more about this supposed school science program that was shut down. Linky?

Liberals denying evidence? Like...evidence of intelligent design perhaps? Making a grand generalization based on a recently uncovered climate data snafu is a bit of a stretch.

I believe they're referring to Berkeley High, it was just a proposal, but was interesting if you didn't see it. Apparently these "racially sensitive" people think science is too hard for some demographics.
