Updated Amazon Kindle DX will ship later this month.

The Amazon Kindle eReader has proven to be a massive hit for the company and helped to jump start the now booming eReader market. Over the holiday season, the Kindle was one of the most popular sellers on

Amazon first announced the larger screen Kindle DX in May of 2009. The DX offered a larger 9.7-inch display and offered the same wireless connectivity that the original, smaller screen Kindle. The Kindle DX first started shipping in June of 2009. Amazon announced today that it has updated the Kindle DX with wireless connectivity that will work worldwide.

Other than the updated wireless connectivity, the DX is the same as the previous model. The specifications include a 9.7-inch auto rotating display with 16 shades of gray. The new DX has an integrated PDF reader, 3.3GB of memory, and features adjustable text size. The new DX version with global wireless will be offered for pre-order starting today and will ship on January 19 for $489.

“Kindle DX is great for personal and professional documents, cookbooks, and textbooks – anything that is highly formatted. Documents look so good on the big Kindle DX display, that you’ll find yourself changing ink toner cartridges less often and printing fewer documents,” said Ian Freed, Vice President, Amazon Kindle. “Now Kindle DX with Global Wireless lets customers enjoy the ease of Whispernet wireless delivery of books, newspapers, magazines, blogs and documents while traveling in over 100 countries worldwide.”

The new global wireless DX will replace the existing models. This may be a good time to buy the older DX versions if you only need wireless service in the U.S., presumably they will be discounted ahead of the new model release if any are left after the holidays.

Anybody who likes to read books.

It may do only one thing, but it does it VERY VERY well, much better than multi-purpose devices.

I used to agree with your view (and I've got iPods, etc, etc -- I'm an electronic toy person) but when I was given a Kindle-1 as a birthday present, my opinion of it switched 180 degrees within five minutes of having one, and I now adore the device incredibly.

It REALLY is worth it for anybody who does any significant amount of book reading (which, btw, will increase a LOT once having a Kindle). It's both amazing and a great surprise. It's the eInk display that really sets it apart.

I don't know about you, but I have several bookshelves full of books. Some of those books are over 20 years old. A device like this that can store several hundred books is very seductive to me not only in space savings (no bookshelves needed), but handling (no hunting for an elusive paperback in a stack of a couple hundred).

The only downsides I can visualize is the possibility of technology changes (technology never stands still) making kindles devices or books I invest in today obsolete and unusable in 10-20 years. I would sure as hell hate to spend a couple thousand US$ on e-books only to have them unreadable in the kindle v10 I buy in 2020. Also -- Lithium polymer batteries have a limited life span. Can you change the batteries on these? How much are they?
