Apple is offering some decent Black Friday discounts, just like last year.  (Source: Apple.com)
Cupertino's high-end luxury laptops and MP3 players (briefly) get a bit less pricey

Love it or hate it, Apple produces the most popular MP3 players on the market (the ubiquitous iPod).  And its laptops/desktops offer a nice set of hardware in a small package, albeit at a high price.

But for one day Apple's prices, typically somewhat high, are dipping lower, making them a bit more palatable for shoppers.  The Apple international holiday sales event coincides with America's tradition of Black Friday.  For those not in the know, Black Friday is a sadistic tradition of waking up at ungodly hours on the Friday after Thanksgiving, after stuffing yourself full of tryptophan-laden turkey the day before (or perhaps Tofurky, for the vegetarians).

Black Friday, though, is music to Apple Shoppers' ears.  For one day only the company is offering its shoppers savings of $11 on the new iPod Nano, making it only $138 for the 8 GB unit and $168 for the 16 GB unit.  The new Nano comes with a built in camera, FM Tuner, and a glaring array of 9 colors.

But the iPod deals don't end there.  Apple is offering its 8, 32, and 64 GB iPod Touches for $178, $268, and $368, a savings of $21, $31, and $41 dollars respectively.  Apple is offering free engraving on any of the "new" iPod models ordered in the story today.

Apple's also is offering some decent size cuts to its MacBook Pro pricing.  It's offering $101 off all its aluminum unibody MacBook Pro models and its 21.5-inch or 27-inch iMac desktops (beware some iMac units are reportedly shipping damaged).  The discounts bring the entry-level price of a MacBook Pro to $1098 (for the cheapest 13-inch model) and the iMac's to $1098 (for the cheapest 21.5-inch model).

Apple is also offering its Apple TV for $21 off ($208).  Unlike most Apple products, Apple TV hasn't gained much traction, but Apple is surely hoping the sales will give it a slight boost.  Apple is offering a plethora of other software and accessories and reduced prices.  Among the notable entries are the iWork Suite ($30 off) and the Nike+iPod Sensor ($5 off).

Apple is offering free shipping on any order over $50.  The discounts this year are in line with last year's, and less than the supposed leaked Apple ad, first aired by Boy Genius Report, which proved to be a farce.  That ad had claimed that Apple was going to offer up to 25 percent off its MacBook Pro lineup and other bigger discounts.  The graphic for the actual ad did pop up about a week ago, in a second leak, which proved true this time.

Black Friday cuts, and still totally not worth the price.

LOL...

there is a reason Apple only has 5% of the market... Its NOT because they have a superior product, that's for sure. At best it's an equal alternative at a much higher price with far less consumer options.

Some people are going to save $100 buying a MacBook today. $100 is still $100.

<10% is still <10%. Not something worth talking about on the best shopping day of the year.

This is not a Black Friday deal worth mentioning on the front page of DT. Paid placement?

The issue I believe is that Mick only wrote an article for Apple's BF deal, where the other article on deals was generalized for deals, not by company. It seems a bit like an ad, not news. Whether this is news is questionable.

Why not? DT covers the Zune, too. Oh, and the Palm Pre. And yes, the Mac. News is news. Omitting news is a bad idea for a news site.

Then please let me know where is the 8 paragraph article for the $78 Blu-ray player at Wal-Mart. C'mon, news is news.

Before you say Blu-ray is old news I got one word for you..................iPod.

Despite these "black friday deals" the products listed still aren't worth the price.

Do the execs/marketing dept. ACTUALLY believe their prices are justified by their incapable OS/Hardware? This leaves me scratching my head in wonder, or disbelief.

Evidently over 8% of US consumers believed so. Even in this economy, Apple's Mac sales are setting records. Makes it hard to justify lowering prices to match your misguided beliefs.

So if you increase your market share you shouldn't ever lower the price on your products? Let me know how that works out for you.

"Evidently over 8% of US consumers believed so.

I hate to burst your bubble but...

1. US is 1 country
2. consumers are not total sales. Business/enterprise sales for Mac are 0%
3. Windows 7 is out now.

Nope, i was wrong. I liked bursting it.

RE: Mac price cuts
By michael2k on 11/29/2009 10:52:45 PM , Rating: 1
How are you bursting anything? It's still true that Apple is setting Mac sales records, even now.

What are you going to believe when they hit 10% US market share and 4% worldwide?

RE: Mac price cuts
By themaster08 on 11/30/2009 5:42:44 AM , Rating: 2
The records are one thing and I can't argue those, but you make it sound like 4% market share is something significant.

I'm sure such a vast amount of market share has Microsoft quaking in their boots, especially since Windows 7 almost has equal market share already.

"What are you going to believe when they hit 10% US market share and 4% worldwide? "

I will be happy. Dont get me wrong, I want Apple to do well. Apple's success means that MS and PC vendors all have to push themselves harder and either innovate, lower prices, or some combo of both. Therefore we all win. I am not anti-Mac, I am just pointing out that your 8% claims are full of crap.

If Apple climbs to 10% US Market share, it still wont be 10% - because your figures are not total sales, they are consumer market. Enterprise/business is half of that again and Apple will never have anything there so still your 10% claims will still be BS... You are looking at only one country and only one sector (consumer).

RE: Mac price cuts
By michael2k on 11/30/2009 10:15:33 AM , Rating: 2
That 10% includes business/enterprise.

Meaning if you are only looking at consumer sales right now their marketshare is much closer to 20% (assuming that consumer is half of all sales).

1 in 12 of ALL PCs sold in the US are Macs.
1 in 6 PCs sold to consumers in the US are Macs.

Mac US marketshare in 09:http://brainstormtech.blogs.fortune.cnn.com/2009/1...

Less relevant since it's an estimate: http://brainstormtech.blogs.fortune.cnn.com/2008/0...

21% consumer market in 08. Of course the real issue is that Apple has historically had higher market share (before the Copland debacle), so really they're climbing out of the hole. They are only now returning to their historic sales levels.

The take away point however is that they are now more profitable than they were 20 years ago.

Here is a more trusted source for the full picture. They have been climbing a bit recently with the whole Vista flop thing, and the iPod boost, but like I said, Win7 is out now and I think their slow increase will stop now and probably even reverse a bit from here. Whatever... I hope they do well.

Every big company I've worked for had macs in their web design departments. Advertising, marketing and magazine publishing still rely on macs. Yup, sounds like 0% sales to me. </sarcasm> It may not be the majority of desktops in corporate America, but they still have a impact.

Wow! Price cuts of just under 10%! That's such a deal!

Ok, sarcasm aside, really, how do they expect that their hardware, costing three times an equal PC, might be slightly more appealing with a less than 10% discount while other manufacturers and retailers are discounting 20% or more?

Even Apple's deals suck.

People have been buying Macs at original prices and still thought they bought a good deal. Imagine if the prices fell significantly this one day, how is it any different from Jobs telling every one of his hypnotized children that they were, and had always been, ripped off?

RE: What a deal!
By stubeck on 11/27/2009 6:58:07 PM , Rating: 3
People have been buying everything else at normal prices, and people don't go to the president of the company to complain about future sales. I don't see why anyone would be annoyed "OMG, I bought something 3 months ago and it was on sale on the biggest sale day of the year." Giving people discounts shouldn't be seen as a bad thing at any point.

This Black Friday bites. The Doorbuster term was thrown around so loosely this year that the term seems tainted now. Did anyone see the Sears ads they printed Doorbuster next to everything? It shows up more than the items themselves.

If anyone looked around you could find the same deal or better online somewhere and tax free without having to get up at 5am and stand in a line only to find out the deal was limited to one item in stock. All these netbook deals are Windows XP not even Windows 7. I loved XP but would have preferred Windows 7 and 2 gigs or ram please.

This is the first Black Friday I went to bed early and slept in because the deals just weren't there. I'm betting not only because of economy reasons but because of poor black Friday deals they announce how holiday sales slid and that black Friday didn't bring in the numbers they hoped for.

I bought 2 $10.00 games that's all.

Why is this posted on the front page? There have been way better deals for computers all day today and yesterday. Oh yea, it's Apple. It deserves special treatment for being "different."

Sound familiar?
