SAL9000 still has to find a way to break the news of his "marriage" to his parents.  (Source: Sal9000, via BoingBoing.net)
Before wedding, groom takes his virtual bride-to-be on a dream trip to Guam

When people talk about turning on their significant other, they aren't usually referring to a power switch.  But that's exactly how one lonely Japanese man found love.

The Japanese man, who goes by the gaming nickname SAL9000, found himself falling in love at first sight when he saw the pixellated image of Nene Anegasaki in the Nintendo DS "love simulator" Love Plus.  Like many other Japanese men playing the popular title, he wooed his sweetheart of choice, taking her out on dates (virtual of course) and softly whispering that he loved her into the Nintendo DS microphone.

He even was able to kiss his virtual sweetheart, once he was in her good graces.  In the game this feature literally involved kissing the screen of the Nintendo DS.

However, he took what most players consider digital fauxmance a bit more seriously than most.  In a story not unlike that of the indie movie Lars and the Real Girl (which sees the protagonist fall in love with a anatomically-correct doll he ordered online), SAL9000 actually married Nene at a Tokyo marriage pseudoceremony.

While not legally binding by any means, the ceremony proceeded much like a normal wedding, and was broadcast on the internet.  Breaking further with tradition, he took his bride on a honeymoon to Guam before the "wedding".

The wedding itself was an elaborate affair with an MC, a DJ, speeches from friends and family members, nostalgic slideshows, wedding music and even a tossed bouquet.  The entire affair was broadcast on a video sharing site that SAL9000 is a prominent member of.

SAL9000 personally contacted news site BoingBoing.net, writing, "I'm so happy so many people were able to witness this.  Some people have expressed doubts about my actions, but at the end of the day, this is really just about us as husband and wife. As long as the two of us can go on to create a happy household, I'm sure any misgivings about us will be resolved.  The two of us hope to continue to let our love for each other grow as time goes on."

Lisa Katayama, a US freelance journalist who has studied the Japanese tech culture says that virtual romance is a growing trend in Japan and isn't just for weirdos.  She points to real life couple Koh and Yurie; Koh has began a digital affair in Love Plus, which his wife Yurie has begrudgingly accepted.  Ms. Katayama also points to 37-year-old Tokyo resident Nisan who fell in love with a pillowcase with the image of a teenage anime character on it.  Nisan carries the pillow around with him when he goes out and comments adoringly, "When I die, I want to be buried with her in my arms."

Ms. Katayama says such romantic attachments to anime or videogame characters may seem foreign to us, but they're really not that different.  She explains, "Here [in the US] it's OK to love your dog, it's OK to even love your car, but it's not OK to love an anime character.  We draw the line there in Western culture but in Japan some people still draw the line at cars and some people draw it a little further.  I don't know if it's a good thing for society but we're always replacing things that humans used to do with technology, so it's not too far off to think that things like romance and sex can be replaced by technology."

No matter how strange it seems, Ms. Katayama is right -- its hard to begrudge this unusual couple their happiness.  SAL9000's next planned move is to break the news of his digital marriage to his parents.  Here's hoping that goes smoothly and that the groom's love (or DS battery, perhaps) never dies.

Loving your Dog, and Car isn't the same...
By SilthDraeth on 11/26/2009 9:26:24 AM , Rating: 5
By loving our dog, it is a love of friendship, not... I want to marry my dog kind of love.

Cars, we are infatuated with, but by no means do most people want to marry their car either.

I can't wait for the news story how his best friend was caught playing his DS and "cheating" on his wife, and the dude murders his friend and destroys his DS.

*note* I don't want anyone to actually get murdered, just pointing out how ridiculous this is.

There's one fallacy with those comparisons.
The game itself is a simulation of a virtual girlfriend. It does have qualities (Simulated dating, voice acting, scenarios) that make someone "fall in love" with it over say inanimate object like car.

Going so far as marrying however is quite extraordinary.

Yeah but it is really going to suck (no pun intended) when she doesn't want to put out one evening and he asks for a "hand" instead. What happens when she becomes virtually pregnant? He's going to be blocked for nine months with no recourse at all.

Does the DS come with a FUFME attachment? Man, what a messed up, strange world we're in now.

Ok seriously ...

It has to be a publicity stunt of some sort and the guy is just looking for some attention. No sane person would do this and actually mean it. Hell maybe it's all part of his plan to snag a real girl. I know some out there that would consider it just because it's so pethetic.

I've seen some really really gorgeous girls go out with guys that don't even come close to being called homely little own handsome. Thing is there are ALOT of women in Japan. He could find probably 50 000 willing to date him just as easily as one.

Has to be a stunt and if it's not he should be commited since he obviously has a screw loose somewhere.

Well, you got the first part right...he a complete fruitcake...

But the second part, well I've read about things as strange as this going on on other countries (like the man who had intercorse with +1k cars in the US, or the thai guy who got stuck in a park bench because he put his thing in it, etc).

It makes me wonder if most people is just plain stupid or they are making an effort...

PS - You can be sure that this guy will help humankind evolution by removing himself from our future gene pool by not breeding (after this report, he will probably never get laid again - if he ever did)... ;)

Well, maybe in the US too.

He could have had the ceremony on the Jerry Springer show after some weirdy-beardy old guy marries his horse.

There are fruitcakes everywhere dude, so no doubt you could find something for every country id you really wanted. They probably wouldn't be as attractive as this guys "wife" either, to be fair him.

I hope he keeps their relationship in DS form, rather than printing her out. Paper cuts can be very nasty.

Technology facilitating desire is great, don't have to worry about being dumped.

Once technology has reached the level where it can provide us with love without making us aware of the illusion, then we will no longer need other humans.

Actually, I don't think that'd be a bad thing. I can foresee several things that would have to change though. Namely I think getting/being sperm/egg donor would have to be necessary. If you can get your love without fear of being hurt then you won't have to worry about being jealous and killing people over it. No more cheating wives/husbands. That'd be a long way off and probably out of anyone's lifetime ATM.

Speculation at best. AI would have to be dumb. Greed is a definition of human species, and an intelligent decision to gather more or a better of a resource/source.

This isn't the most purifying thing about being human, nor the best aspect to look at.

What about when your virtual significant other is intelligent enough to realize there is more, or the fact that a virtual partner would last longer than your life time.

So much to hypothesize

The Trek episode "Requiem for Methuselah" had similar issues. An AI like Rayna, that's sophisticated enough to be a worthy and interesting partner...might have its own agenda. There may be no more certainty that it would want you, than there is with another human.

Or you can have an electronic 'geisha' that's hard-wired to be devoted (like, as someone noted, 'Cherry 2000'), but that could equate to being intellectually unstimulating.

Not being free to have a relationship with a crewmember, Captain Janeway of ST: Voyager created a kind of 'companion' character for herself in the Holodeck...and found he wasn't as interesting as she hoped, because she could always tweak his personality to be closer to whatever her notion of a 'perfect' man was. In the end, she left some 'imperfections' in his program, and had the computer deny any further external changes to his program, even by her. (Making him no more malleable and ideal than a human, and so, more realistic.)

Of course, in all the above examples, at least the 'character' was a touchable, three dimensional entity...

ROFL that happened several years ago when they made the virtual porn suit in japan. I think Vivid studios had something to do with it. This was a FULL body suit with goggles, and you could have virtual simulated sex with porn stars. I remember reading about it on one of these tech forums it was most likely this one or Endgadget.

This one is quite special in terms of the myriad of ability for "interaction", thanks to peripherals of DS like microphone and touchscreen.

Yeah, you guys are not much different.

You go on-line and have virtual parties, BF/GF, marriage, online sex, etc and guess what. Its not too much different as its all nothing but dots on the screen.

Japanese (and Asian in general) is different from the west, but such thoughts of being in love with a inanimate / simulated thing is more underground in the USA. If we can have Cherry2000 (a movie), yeah - many guys will go for that than a real woman. And the Japanese ARE working quite hard at making such androids. In the USA - we have of course, real-doll and a spin-off Doll series based off cartoon style with odder looking heads and bodies.

Personally, I say its each your own. But technically, I think its a bit of an illness or a way a shy/anti-social person to create affection. Sorry, a video game, doll. dildo or pillow have ZERO feelings. Those objects didn't PICK you as their love partner, whatever. Perhaps the best advantage of an artificial girl friend is that they somehow manage to piss you off - you can turn it off or put it in the closet.

Getting hugs, kisses and sex from your GF or BF is far more FUN and healthier than a toy - batteries or otherwise.
