Some of the new iMacs Apple shipped won't boot, while others have cracked screens.

Apple has certainly had its share of quality issues on its high-end OS-X-sporting notebooks and PCs.  From hard drive (SATA) issues to display issues, Apple has been unable to remedy many of these issues despite repeated firmware updates and in some cases has left those affected to deal with the mess on their own.  To add a bit of irony to such problems, Apple is infamous for its slogan "it just works", which it has used to poke fun at its "buggy" PC competitors.

Now those ordering the company's new iMacs are experiencing a wealth of new problems.  Customers ordering the Intel Core i7 Nehalem-powered machines are finding their Macintosh dream machines coming with a unsightly cracked screens [Source: Apple Support Forums].  Others are finding that their new unit simply won't boot.  Among those with the latter problem are editors at Engadget, who received a non-booting unit for their review.

The bottom-left corner is almost unanimously the site of the screen cracking, so Apple may have a quality control issue with its shipping packaging, some have speculated.  On Apple's support forums, a user "scopro" describes, "There's no apparent damage to the styrofoam or box so it looks like that's a weak spot in the screen and how they are being packed in the boxes.  Hopefully Apple will improve their packaging for these larger iMacs as it may take until Dec. 7 for my replacement to arrive."

As the comment implied, Apple is shipping replacement units and hopefully most of these will arrive by Christmas -- considering that many are likely gifts.  Unfortunately for those looking to get an i7 iMac, they have to take their chances and order online, as the 2.8GHz Intel Core i7 860 processor is offered as a $200 built-to-order option (total price is $2199) on the new 27" iMac, and thus is not available at Apple stores.  A 2.66 GHz Core i5 750 27" iMac is also available online for $1999.

The new iMacs -- if they're not non-booting or otherwise marred -- pack some nice improvements.  The most significant improvement is obviously the new Intel Core i7 processor, which sports 8 MB of L3 cache and an improved design.  The new iMac also ships with a wireless keyboard and the new Magic Mouse.  It can support up to 16 GB of memory.  The new machines come with a large and attractive (if not cracked) 16:9 screen with a 2560x1440 pixel resolution.  They also ship with Apple's new operating system, Snow Leopard, and are ready for Windows 7 (via Bootcamp) to help Mac owners get their gaming fix (for the small crowd of Mac owners that are also PC gamers).

It doesn't include anything at all. Your assumption that they're superior in quality is based off their marketing and nothing else.

We all know what marketing does. I have yet to see a Subway sub look the way it does in any of their commercials.

The problem is that Apple uses comparison in their ads. When they say that any PC with Windows won't work and they claim that their Macs just work then that's an expectation and not marketing.

And the Irony - Microsoft gets sued over the whole Vista debacle (as it should), Verizon gets sued over its commercial (as it should not) but no word of Apple getting sued. Seems like an open and shut case - it just works - well not so much.

Apple had to remove some ad campaign in the UK cause they were too "optimistic", give it a bet more time and they'll be sued like everyone else.

Apple have had to remove or change more than a couple of TV ads here in the U.K for things like false advertising.

The U.S needs to step up on this.

"Inferior" is an extremely relative - not to mention inflammable - term.

Apple products are certainly not inferior to the majority of PC hardware out there. Just taking a look at the cheap-ass stuff circulating in the marketplace shows as much, not just casings and keyboards, screens and whatnot, but mobos, add-in cards and so on. There's a multitude of simply bad, ill-fitting and substandard products out there.

Wether Apple hardware is comparable to the best in the PC camp is something nobody here is in a position to say for certain - any mass-produced item is susceptible to bad production runs and it's happened to ANY manufacturer you care to mention.

Of course, Apple being Apple means it's too tempting a target for all the haters out there, regardless of how deserved the criticism may be - or not be, perhaps. I can't help wonder why you people bother to heap this much bile on the company. You don't have to buy Apple stuff - I certainly don't - why do you even care?

Find something more useful to do with your time instead.

I have yet to come across a brand of anything that is just BAD, save for Hitachi Deskstars back in the day. Even the el cheapo motherboards that come in package deals with CPUs that have pretty much no features, options, or even support, for the most part, work just fine. I got this pretty off brand LCD screen, unless many of you have heard of DCLLCD before, and it's been over 3 years working just great.

I might not be in any real position, but top-of-the-line PC parts are most certainly better than what Apple offers. It's only logical since Apple is effectively just a sub-set of PC parts and are usually a little behind on the top parts that they offer. In terms of quality, I'd still say PC parts best them, but I suppose it depends on what factors you look at. If you just expect your parts to arrive in working order then just about every company is equal. As for what lasts longer.... I couldn't really say. I haven't replaced anything on my computer, save my monitor, because it died of old age. I have broken many a part because of overvolting and overheating and replaced many more parts just to get newer/better ones.

That's because Apple has the best team of lawyers in the world as far as I can tell. Their legal department must get paid bucco bucks as they seem to be able to almost anything they want.

Well yea :P I know that, so sad they can't even live up to their greater then all, better then the best image :/ Actually I don't like Macs, so it's not sad, just shows they are a PC company like any other and not infallible (hopefully others will see that too).

People believe this pitch all the time. Our last CM (contract manufacturer) here in US had TONS of awards, especially from JD Power. But guess what they have little clue what quality is or the personnel to actually speak the language and implement it. The QA Manager was so ignorant/incompentent that she actually stormed out of my meeting because she was literally making a fool of herself hahahaha funniest sht I ever seen.

She was fired shortly after of complaints from me at all. And although our new CM's in China are not the best still, they are much better than the ones we worked with here. Our Chinese CM's do that as well. Tons of awards, tons of charts and team stuff. But once you sit down and start talking about quality there's absolutely no person qualify enough to have a conversation with.

How can a company function without anyone knowing how to record defects and take appropriate actions? See what I mean hahahahaha Nice awards and charts though :P

At the risk of being massively downrated, mine works..but then I suppose collecting from the store gives less opportunity for problems during distribution, which presumably are at the root of these problems.

One month? I tried one for 3 years. I will never go Apple. worse experience I've ever had. The first damn week I found a way to KP tiger consistently. When I migrated my picts over there were prob about a couple thousand thumbnail files in folders in the dir. So I searched for them in spotlight and dragged them to the recycle bin. Well by the time it got to the bottom of the list it had started populating items in the recycle bin into spotlight and BAM. Infinite loop and KP. That is only one of dozens of BS things that happened in OS X. No one can explain to this day why when I shut down OS X it would only shut down the GUI and take me to the command line. from there I would need to hit the power button to turn it off. Or my personal fav. I did an update to Leopard last October and for some reason the update went bad. Couldn't start up WIFI anymore. Took it into the Apple store and was told yah just reinstall the OS. We'll ignore the fact that in Windows I can uninstall the update and try again, or do a quick system restore. remind me again who's OS is more advanced?
We won't even talk about the 7 times I took my MBP in for repairs. 4 on the first MBP, then they replaced it with a new one and 3 more on the new one. Before the warranty was up I sold the thing and got myself a new Dell. Been happily running Win 7 since January.
I will never again buy into Apple PR campaign. Just works my ass. Maybe it works...just like a rectal examination. Doesn't mean I want one anytime soon.

I'm sorry you had a bad experience lasting 3 years. It does appear like you basically didn't know how to do various tasks in OS X. I also hated receiving the answer to re-install the OS, as I've gotten that from technical people for both Windows, OS X and Linux over the years. What they are really telling you is that they either don't know or don't have the time to troubleshoot it. If you had paid support, you should demand they fix it. Simply re-installing any OS as the first response is ridiculous.

I too have thousands and thousands of family photos and regularly manage them on my OS X based computer. From what you describe, there sounds like several things that may have happened. Spotlight is similar to Microsoft's Search engine. Each must index in the background. With either OS, you must be patient and not assume it is a hung task when the computer is busy. You can verify this in Windows easily, and just as easy in OS using the Activity Monitor (similar to Task Manager).

I have to say though that some of the problems you described are due to impatience and a basic lack of understanding of how to run the system. A point is that somehow you managed to boot OS X into a mode that runs like Linux that allows the GUI to be shut down. This is usually used for diagnostic purposes and can quite easily be disengaged if you prefer. The norm is to just press the power on button and it automatically boots into the Gui, much like Windows.

Apparently you missed a few things in his post. he said the machine KP'd on him. KP means Kernel panic, meaning the machine didnt "hang" or "pause" it had a fatal error. KP is basically the same as the blue screen of death.

If fixing the GUI issue was really that simple, I'm sure he would have figured it out, and not be able to say "No one can explain to this day why when I shut down OS X it would only shut down the GUI and take me to the command line."

No, I got that he was having problems with the machine. It would appear that there has been some Darwin (Unix) changes happening on his machine. The lockups can be memory related (just like in Windows), or System tampering. I suspect something or someone may have been making changes to files incorrectly. The shutdown to command line option sounds like the machine was booting into verbose mode (much like Linux options). This can be done two ways, either holding Command V or setting it via command line. Note this link:

I have run Windows systems since Windows first came out in the 80s. I've been running Macs at home and at work since 2000. The only time I've seen what was described was either memory problems, or some errant install program from a untested download from the Internet. I had a firewall program from a normally trusted vendor, go awry once and change ownership on several System files, while attempting to replace others. It didn't go well. The machine locked up. After looking through the logs, the offending software was easily found and removed. The vendor was notified. I'm sorry for this guys problems with his machine. From his writings, it sounds like he's more suited to staying Windows as he seems comfortable and more knowledgeable with it.

I dare you to actually open your mind. Neither windows or osx are perfect and there's only so many ways you can open a picture, write a letter and of course, browse the web.

I choose to spend my money and when I do, I usually try to find something that's suitable and worth the cash. For instance, I decided to purchase a £120 HP DX2400, slapped in a Q9650 with silly sized heatsink and fan, attached a 120m fan to the side of the case, along with a 9800 GX2 and Western Digital Black 32mb cached 7200rpm drive. Ohh, it's fast, so very fast. Many wouldn't bother but it was runs like a dream first time, every time. Oh it’s so amazing, mmmm, ohh yeah, ugghh.

Windows 'is' a versatile operating system, running on so many machines and configurations that apple can only DREAM of such things. Please stay with apple, they deserve you. (A lot of mac converts are people that trashed their machines time after time due to malware, installed rubbish and of course... infections caused due to trying to find... pron!)

P.s. There's nothing high class about having the same internal components as standard pcs. You may have a ferrari kit for an MR2 Turbo, but at the end of the day, it's still the same under all the 'shiny bits'

I don't know about pretty.

Just two days ago I was walking around Logan Int Airport and was looking at all the laptops people were using. I saw a lot of Macs, and while that design may have been pretty for a few years, it looks rather old and tired now. All the Macs looked exactly the same, it was as if I was looking at a bunch of sheep, as I couldn't tell the difference between any of them simply by their shell.

I remember once, years ago, somebody gave Dell a hard time, said Dell computers all look the same, boring and black. Well to me, Apple is falling into the same rut. They all look the same boring white. No various colors, no various keyboard options, just boring white.

OS X may be a really nice OS, and Mac's may have nice hardware under the hood, but I still like options.

Last couple of times I have checked, Mercedes, BMW, Volvo... were never among top 10 in reliability polls. Those seats were pretty much reserved for likes of Toyota, Subaru, Lexus... maybe an odd European like VW.

One can argue that, with all extras, luxury cars have more things that can go wrong. True. But problem I have with Apples is - they don't have any extras relative to rest of the industry, they are just nice, custom bodyworks with standard Toyota engines, gearboxes, suspensions... sort of speak.

27" Mac has nice processing performance, but graphics are let-down for such a big screen. I doubt 4850 can run many (if any) recent 3D game in screen's native resolution. I consider that bad in any case, and even worst for that price. Add to that what seems to be very common - screen and boot problems...quite a disaster.
