Marines in boot camp deal with simulated chemical attacks  (Source: USMC)
New technology could one day protect vehicles from chemical attack

The Defense Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL) in the United Kingdom is interested in creating a new custom paint coating that would be able to absorb chemical warfare attacks.

Using coatings that are already used today to help camouflage vehicles, and researchers believe they have the ability to modify it so it can absorb chemical agents.  Furthermore, DSTL researchers are especially interested in having the paint absorb and then decontaminate the agent so it will not harm soldiers.

The so-called strippable technology used on Humvees and other vehicles is designed so it can be easily removed or installed, with the color of the vehicle designed to match the surrounding environment.

The reactive coatings being developed by DSTL will include enzymes and catalysts, and it will likely still be a few years before it could find its way to the field.  There are similar coating developments in the works, but a caustic wash must be carried out before it can be disposed of safely.

"Ultimately, what we'd like to create a coating that changes color to indicate it's been contaminated, decontaminates itself, then returns to the original color when it's clean," DSTL team leader Dr. Mitchell told BBC.  "This is a long-term but not unreasonable ultimate objective."

As insurgents look to expand their attack capabilities, there is a constant threat of possible biological or chemical attack from weapons obtained from several national governments.

So if the camo paint is contaminated with a chemical agent the camo paint will change to let them know it was contaminated with a chemical agent? So we will go from Camo green, to Florescent Green, so now you know your contaminated and the enemy knows :-) hehehe

Soldier A: We've confirmed a direct hit of our new chemical weapon on a platoon of enemy light infanty.
Soldier B: So we are using chemical warfare eh? Scary stuff. How come we don't get ration of gas masks?
Soldier C: Shh, this is suppose to be classified but, the so called chemical agent code named Agent Orange Deluxe is nothing more than orange paint you paint your house with. I heard that we had encountered difficulties in producing the real stuff so the chief had to improvise. But you can be assured that it is as effective as the real stuff in disrupting the enemy and initiating panic. Look how quick they've dumped their humvees and ran!

Wouldn't imaginary paint be cheaper? It worked fine when we fought for Bush's imaginary WMDs in Iraq.
