While the iPhone has been a very popular phone with consumers, one of the most criticized aspects of the phone has been its network which is supported by AT&T. According to recent reports, the 30% iPhone dropped call rate in NYC is considered "normal".

Verizon's most recent attack on the iPhone came in the form of "There's a map for that" ads which poked fun at AT&T's 3G coverage in the United States. While those ads -- which were a humorous take on AT&T's "There's an app for that" commercials -- threw a few jabs at the Apple/AT&T dynasty, Verizon's newest ad campaign is full of powerful combinations.

In a new commercial which aired tonight according to Engadget, Verizon once again goes with similar iPhone themes (music and font in this case) to attack all of the things that the AT&T/iPhone can't do or doesn't physically have. Some of the gems in the commercial include "iDon't have a real keyboard", "iDon't run simultaneous apps", "iDon't allow open development", and "iDon't have interchangeable batteries".

The commercial then shifts gears and goes all "mech" on the viewer to advertise the upcoming Motorola Droid which will use Google's Android 2.0 operating system. While the Motorola Droid isn't shown in the commercial, Verizon points users to a teaser site at

Verizon's hard stance against the iPhone sheds quite a bit of doubt on Apple's iPhone coming to its next generation LTE network (as many Verizon customers and burned AT&T customers have pined for); however, stranger things have happened.

It remains to be seen if the Motorola Droid will have what it takes to dethrone Apple's iPhone in the hearts and minds of American consumers and push more customers to Verizon's network. If the Droid isn't enough, it'll have plenty of help from the Blackberry Storm2 and the Verizon Palm Pre.

It's quite funny. Microsoft's commercials are touting cheap PC's it doesn't even make.

Verizon, a provider of cell phone and data services, is going after Apple, a cell phone maker.

The cheap machines that "Microsoft doesn't make" all come with Windows Vista and soon Windows 7, which is the point that Microsoft was trying to make. With Apple, you are locked into buying an Apple made computer(without violating the license for MacOS X).

Basically, Microsoft pushes the idea that you can run Windows on pretty much any x86 based machine with enough system memory to handle it. That is a fair approach.

Now, Verizon clearly can't really claim any superiority in devices that work on their network since RIM/Blackberry has devices for all the providers. So, they attack the one big device that AT&T has that they do not. The stupid thing is that AT&T has other phones that have a real keyboard, and will probably be releasing a Palm Pre for AT&T the moment the Sprint exclusivity contract expires, which also has a real keyboard.

Signifigantly more likely to see the Pre on Verizon, since both are CDMA.

GSM is the standard across Europe, and since the Pre has just been released over there, it is just about the contracts right now. Yes, there will probably be a Verizon version released shortly as well, but it is really more about WHEN we see the Pre available for other networks rather than if.

Verizon, a provider of cell phone and data services, whom also SELL PHONES. Who cares if they don't make them, Verizon is still trying to sell phones that directly compete with the iPhone. It should not take a rocket scientist to figure this one out.

Which is why the US sucks with our stupid "let's sign you up for a 2-year contract with a restricted phone, pda level phone or not."

Still, aside from one commercial that Verizon did to mock the same BB phone on another network, when have you seen a carrier mock a phone so directly? That's called desperate.

I like Android phones, but their hardware just sucks. Hopefully these new models will compensate. And they better have finally added BT file sharing, because if they haven't, I'm not upgrading from my Motorola A1200.

And at least Android is number 2 in popularity with my friends, making it easy to work with more people.

You absolutely do not have to sign up for a 2 year contract with any carrier. Just buy the phone outright, they even advertise the non-contract price.

Who ever thinks you HAVE to sign a 2 year contract to get a phone in the US is a MORON. Why? Because they ignore one the basic common sense things in life that most people don't even have to be told they just "sense" its a smart thing to do --- read before you sign.

I just got a new cell phone two weeks ago from AT&T (no not an i phone) and its clearly stated that I don't have to sign a contract. However the phone will cost xxx dollars if I don't sign one and I'm not eligible for any rebates w/o the contract signing.

The single biggest reason why carriers lock you into contracts is because they subsidize all or most the cost of the actual phone. The agreement is like the carrier saying "Hey we'll cover the cost of this phone if you promise to stay with us for 24 months so we can recover our cost and make some profit."

Considering w/o an agreement some smart phones would cost you $500 or more out of pocket , I think most folks are ok with a 2 year deal.

Don't you see - this is part of a greater plan. This is part of a 2 prong strategy: get consumers to understand AT&T's 3G network is not that great (or at least doesn't provide much nationwide coverage) and put some pressure on Apple to not renew their exclusivity contract with AT&T. The ispoofs support the later part of that strategy. I think its genius since Apple/Jobs are nearly psychotic about protecting their "brand."

CheapER. Not cheap. There's a $500 premium for that translucent Apple logo on comparable units. Apple just can't compete with educated people, only those that think they are educated.

Well, I guess it comes down to preference (strong preference, to pay 500 extra). Even a lot of computer science university faculty have apple computers though, so even some of the actually educated seem to like them. I don't understand why myeslf. I always chuckle to myself when they have to look for their silly little adapters whenever they try to plug their macbook into a projector, since I guess Macs don't have real video out ports. Personally, I would pay a Microsoft tax of $500 to be able to use windows, because I like Windows 7 and like running any software I want. Software compatibility-wise, macs have come a long way, but are still not even close to PCs.
