Oracle, Sun get support in ongoing battle against IBM
As Oracle patiently awaits for
approval to purchase Sun Microsystems, the company led by CEO Larry
Ellison recently received a bit of support from Gov. Arnold
Schwarzenegger.
During the Oracle OpenWorld tech conference
held in San Francisco each year, Gov. Schwarzenegger hit the stage to
discuss technology's role in California's struggling economy, and
discussed innovations made in “cleantech” and medical
technology.
He also praised
both Ellison and Sun chairman Scott McNealy, as the two companies
look towards the future. If the acquisition is finalized, it
should provide the groundwork for a very interesting battle between
Oracle and IBM.
Although Oracle showed off its new
database product that utilizes Sun hardware and Oracle software, some
of the event was spent verbally attacking IBM. During the
event last week, Ellison offered a challenge -- worth $10 million --
to a company that finds its software isn't twice as fast on Sun
servers than on IBM servers.
"IBM, you are more than
welcome to enter. If you'd like to take us on, make our
day."
Oracle has a very large software presence, and
hopes its Sun buyout will give it a better hardware/server presence.
IBM is best known for software and services these days, but also has
servers available it can bundle software on to for clients.
Oracle
is still spending large amounts of money for acquisitions, gobbling
up smaller tech companies that have technology Oracle could implement
in future products.
"Paying an extra $500 for a computer in this environment -- same piece of hardware -- paying $500 more to get a logo on it? I think that's a more challenging proposition for the average person than it used to be." -- Steve Ballmer
