Samsung SCH-W880 Camera Phone  (Source: Engadget)
Samsung phone supports fast data speeds and 12MP still shots with optical zoom

Camera phones have been around for years now and the thing that most of them have in common is that the camera tends to be a tacked on feature rather than something really designed to work well. Samsung has changed that with a new device called the SCH-W880.

The device is more like a camera with a phone tossed in as an added feature. The camera sensor has 12-megapixel resolution and a lens with 3x optical zoom. Engadget has posted a leaked marketing image of the camera that gives a few of the specifications away, even if they are hard to make out.

What we can tell is that the camera will be able to record HD video, likely at 720p resolution. The device also has a WVGA AMOLED rear screen that is 3.3-inches wide. The camera phone supports HSDPA data and has GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, DMB TV tuner, and a microSD card slot. DMB support likely means the handset will never leave Korea unfortunately.

Pricing and availability are unknown.

i hope it has an automatic lens-cover--like my current camera does.

the only thing which would make this better? if sanyo still had their own cell-phone brand & had made this. sanyo phones (before the kyocera takeover) were damn near perfect.

If the phone works properly and has a great camera, whats the problem? I'd love to have a phone that's a great camera as well as a great phone. Asia is so far ahead of the US in cell phone technologies though its not even funny.

Agreed. To some people, they may want a camera first, phone second. And yes, Asia seems to have many more techy phones, some good, some just quirky.

This is the first time I have seen a device that I would consider carrying around. I don't have a cell phone and don't pack a small camera, and I also don't pack my DSLR everywhere. With this kind of full convergence though, I would seriously consider taking the plunge. If only it could be fully waterproof too.

I was talking with a co-worker about how if I had the cash, I'd get a nice slim point-and-shoot to carry everywhere, and a nice DSLR for when I know I'll be taking photos. He replied: "I bring this DSLR everywhere. I left my lens bag at home cause I didn't think I'd be taking any photos today."

:)

There is a girl in my Japanese class who already has one of these phones. Or at least it is a Samsung and looks nearly identical.

Sounds a lot like the argument that you don't need a cell phone to play music because you have and mp3 player. Everyone new phone is also an mp3 player now days. Why would you want to carry two devices when you can carry one?

I'll tell you why, I want the 30 hours of music playback from my ipod touch without thinking about draining my android phone battery. I want the normal headphones with ipod use, but would rather die than use AT&T as my service provider.

The same for phone/camera. I think a camera (then phone) would be SPECTACULAR for many people (not me). My mother would love it.

Then just use an iPhone on T-Mobile if you hate AT&T that much, why on earth would anyone buy an iPod touch to just listen to music? If that's the case you'll surely get greater battery life with a much higher capacity by going with an iPod classic.
