Leaked information points to $50 price cut for Palm Pre

Sprint runs one of the largest mobile networks in the country, though it is struggling with customer losses to competitors and lacks compelling handsets to lure new customers to its network. The Palm Pre was one of the highest profile exclusives for the Sprint network and according to many reports, the Pre failed to generate the type of sales and new customers that Sprint had originally hoped.

With the HTC Hero Android phone coming to the Sprint network at $179.99 and the Pre currently selling at $199.99, it would make sense that many customers would jump on the less costly Android-powered device if on the Sprint network.

A bit of leaked information has surfaced at PreCentral that claims the Palm Pre will be getting a minor price cut on the Sprint network. According to the tipster, the price through indirect retail partners of Sprint like Best Buy and non-corporate stores will drop to $149.99 thanks to a $50 mail-in rebate.

Best Buy has become very wise to the fact that many consumers don’t go for mail-in rebates today and has been offering any Sprint mail-in rebates in its retail stores as instant rebates. While there is no official word from Best Buy that this will be the case for the Pre price cut (assuming the price cut is real at all), but there is no reason to believe Best Buy wouldn't offer the rebate instantly.

Other Palm devices on Sprint are said to be getting price cuts as well with the Centro dropping to $29.99, the Treo 755p at $99.99, the Treo 800W for $49.99, and the Treo Pro selling for $199.99.
