The last auto manufacturing plant on the west coast will close, Toyota confirms

The last remaining auto-making facility on the west coast will close in March now that Toyota confirmed rumors the plant will close at some point next year.

Toyota's board voted to halt production at the Nummi plant in Fremont, California, a facility built in 1984 that Toyota shared with General Motors.  GM ended the partnership several months ago, which immediately started rumors of a possible plant closure sometime in 2010.

The Nummi plant produces the Toyota Corolla, Matrix, and Tacoma along with the Pontiac Vibe (which is being killed along with the Pontiac brand).

United Auto Workers union members have entered negotiations with New United Motor Manufacturing officials, attempting to see if there is any way Toyota will keep the factory open longer.  The Nummi facility served as Toyota's first  manufacturing foray in the United States, with Nummi employees saying it was them who helped shape Toyota's success.

Toyota, which hasn't had to close a plant outside Japan, was rumored to announce the plant's closure last spring.  Nummi currently employs 4,600 employees, and if Toyota halts production, then the plant's closure will put all of those employees out of work.  Furthermore, supports indicate the ripple effect from Nummi's closure could impact up to 50,000 people.

Toyota is expected to reduce worldwide capacity from 1 million vehicles down to 700,000, with the Nummi closure expected to help Toyota reach that goal.

All GM's fault

Wow, GM and their imcompentancies caused Toyota a factory and lots of job loss. Well at least Toyota is building newer high tech factories elsewhere in the States and creating new jobs. While GM is closing factories and slashing jobs.

Toyota is more of an American company than GM is.

I love how people just want to blame GM for everything. The Pontiac that was produced at this plant was the only GM model coming out of it and accounted for maybe 1/10 of the production capacity. It was the same vehicle as the Toyota Matrix yet somehow people were convinced the Toyota was far superior. I love how people believe what they want to believe. Truth is Toyota just decided to shut it down.

How do you like your foreign manufacturer's now, California?!

Take some pride in your country for once. Buy American.


This has nothing to do with any lack of patriotism and frankly whenever someone spews that crap I find it offensive. Also, don't lecture me about "selling out my country" either.

I would find it more unAmerican to reward shoddy performance "just because X". Everyone just keep must to be good eh Comrade? . I don't think so.

Make a quality product, consumers buy it, you get rich. Now THAT is American.

Where I'm at:

While I'm happy you've had a good experience with American vehicles it is just an anecdote and not statistically significant. The only anecdote that counts for me is my own.

I bought an American (GM) car and it turned out to be junk with a poor resale value. They blew their chance so I moved on. I now own Japanese vehicles. If they screw up I'll give GM another shot.

Since GM may be waiting a while for this screw up their next best option is to make a car good enough to change my mind before then (beat the competition, not just equal them). I'll be on the market again in 2-3 years so they have time to get their sh1t together. I hope they do because all things being *equal* I would rather own American.

Toyota has its headquarters in Japan. GM has its headquarters in AMERICA. I think your logic is flawed.
I think your "logic" is flawed. Since EVERY single automaker is a publicly traded company with global presence, profits from each company goes all over the world. Do you know what a stockholder is? Where do you think those people live? I'll help you with this one. These stockholders live EVERYWHERE. They just don't live in the US, they live in friggin Saudi Arabia, Vietnam, China, etc. When you buy products from a GLOBAL company that sells its shares GLOBALLY, your money goes everywhere.

Do you think that GM or Toyota has a department where they separate their revenues into domestic and foreign? LOL! Everything goes into the pot. And that pot exists everywhere. Your money might go directly into the King of Saudi's pocket as a dividend payment or it might go to build a new factory in Ireland. No car company is domestic or foreign, those days are long gone and never coming back. Live free, buy what you want.

Your point is still 100% valid though.

If paychecks are going to american workers and profits are being shared to american shareholders what else do you really want?

In fact since GM is in the toilet it basically means more money from toyota is going into american hands than money from GM.

I believe Japanese companies can only be owned by Japanese citizens. They can do partnerships with foreign businesses but to companies in Japan are Japanese. It's been a while since I looked at this so it may have changed, but I think your basic premise is flawed.

Well, Toyota's only partly at fault. For making quality products, *mostly. The rest of the blame is leveled squarely at GM for producing crap.

There are a few things you could pick out and say "well, Toyota does this poorly, so your logic is flawed." or "GM is awesome at this, so you can go to hell." That's all well and good, but it's just nit-picking. On the whole, Toyota is just better than GM.

Selling out has nothing to do with choosing to buy a better car. National pride on that sort of level is dangerous. If it was something like exporting tech support to India, then I'd be with you. Or maybe even declaring a unified currency. GM has really just 69ed itself into a failball of suck.

*mostly - I hate the Prius.
