Price cut rumored for next week

The game console wars are hot and with the poor economy, the fight for the dollars that consumers do have to spend is more intense. Sony has been under significant pressure to drop the price of its PS3 console. Sony finally gave into the pressure to cut costs when it announced the new PS3 Slim at $299.99.

Engadget reports that it has confirmed that Microsoft will be cutting the price of its Xbox 360 console to undercut Sony's new PS3 Slim price. According to leaked images of a Target ad said to be coming next week, the new Xbox 360 Pro console will sell for $250 and the 120GB Elite console will sell for $299.

Sony may finally get the break in the console market it needed with the new PS3 Slim and its $299 price point. It's going to be hard for gamers without a console to overlook the Blu-ray value of the PS3 Slim at only $50 more than the cheapest Xbox and the same price as the more expensive Xbox version. Things may well be looking up for Sony in an ever tougher environment. The announcement also helps confirm that the Xbox 360 Arcade is going the way of the Dodo.

You are wrong here, the Arcade version of the Xbox 360 is only 179-199 in most stores

Read the rest of the article... when those consoles dry up, all that's left are $249 and $299 versions.

Sure right now the cheapest 360 is more than $50 difference, but like I said, when those are gone they're gone and all you have left are the 249 and 299 versions.

Worst decision ever. If I had a choice I would buy a PS3 anyday for 299 when the cheapest 360 I can buy is 50 dollars lower. The 200 dollar arcade was the smartest thing MS has done in a while, so who was the marketing genius that decided to get rid of it?

Really MS? You make all your damn money on games and accessories anyways, you should be lowering the price of the arcade to 179.99, and Sony would not be able to touch you.

At the very least they should be selling the PRO for 200 at a loss if this is a storage/developer needing storage issue. My 360 died and I WAS going to buy another one, I guess I won't be now..

Given the length of time the 360 has been out, I bet the choice was made in part on -data-. Maybe few people purchased the Arcade edition, so its just not worth producing it anymore.

The pro is getting the axe.

Unless MS is trying to throw everyone off by shipping boxes with only the Arcade and Elite listed...damn those wile bastards

Is the Arcade really going away?

Other sites are mentioning the 60GB Pro being discontinued and MS being left at $199 for the Arcarde and $299 for the Elite. Maybe the price cut on the Pro is to price it under the Elite and move the remaining stock and the Arcade is sticking around.

Looks like this error was corrected in the new article.

If the PS3 had all the same games as the 360 and Live's infrastructure behind it, it would be the best console ever. Sadly, this is not the case. As one individual that already has a Blu-Ray player and 360 connected to each TV in the house, I see absolutely no benefit to buying a PS3, God of War 3 notwithstanding. I wish this wasn't the case, but I just barely have the time for one console worth of games.

Microsoft needs to fix their biggest problem: storage. After installing a couple games to the hard drive, downloading a few more, then ALL the DLC and gamesaves for said games, the 120GB is simply not sufficient. With 320GB HDDs selling for $50 and 500GB HDDs for $80 (all 2.5" SATA), Microsoft's biggest weakness is the lack of storage support for all the DLC. 120GB can't cut it and they charge far too much for a 120GB drive. If Sony can do it, Microsoft can do it. Of course, another issue is the problem with DRM surrounding said DLC... but that's moreso just a problem with my own situation of having multiple 360s and only one gamertag.
