No release date offered, but Blizzard confirms the development of Cataclysm

During the beginning of BlizzCon 2009, Blizzard officials confirmed development of the latest World of Warcraft expansion pack, Cataclysm, though an official launch date hasn't been offered.

"I'm confident it will be nothing less than Earth-shattering," said Chris Metzen, Blizzard VP of development, who publicly introduced the game.  "It will literally change the world of Azeroth as you know it."

News of the expected Cataclysm announcement first leaked onto the Internet a few weeks back, though Blizzard didn't make an official announcement.  The new expansion will raise the current character level cap from 80 up to 85, offering two new character races, and a new, revamped Azeroth as WoW gamers know it.

The new races include the goblins -- for the horde -- and the wolf-like worgen -- for the alliance -- along with flying mounts, dungeons, raids and race-class combinations.  As expected in an expansion, the game also will offer new monsters and hundreds of new questions, along with several new playing zones.

BlizzCon attendees saw a new trailer that showed Azeroth in ruins, with tsunamis, volcanic eruptions and tidal waves ravaging the countryside as a dragon rose from the Earth.

Blizzard is notorious for releasing video games "when they're done," and most of the studio's game titles undergo at least one delay before launch.  Although Blizzard didn't say when gamers can expect Cataclysm to be released, the rumor mill is churning out unconfirmed information it could be ready sometime next spring.

If you're a WoW gamer, will you purchase the Cataclysm expansion?

Also noted during BlizzCon, Blizzard mentioned Starcraft II will be released in 2010, almost 10 years after the latest Starcraft expansion game.  I'm still waiting to learn more about Starcraft: Ghost -- a game I saw a few years ago, and though t looked pretty good -- but it seemingly has vanished.

I am appalled that you would say such a racist thing.

Now that the obligatory Politically Correct comment is out. Ha good find.

That's actually an "old find" really. I used to play WoW for about a year, meh... I'm sure Blizzard's original intent was to give Alliance a "badass" race, but instead they gave them "furries".
