New ads from FYE, Kmart, point to lower PS3 price

The rumors appear to have been true and the official price cut for the PlayStation 3 will be happening soon. There have been plenty of reports that a “slim” PS3 will be announced some time this month along with price cuts for existing “fat” PS3 units (currently available in 80GB and 160GB variants).

Now the first confirmed reports of signage pointing to the $100 price cuts are finally starting to make an appearance. Over the weekend, FYE leaked signs showing the 80GB and 160GB PS3s priced at $299.99 and $399.99 respectively – this marks a $100 price cut for each model. The ad notes that the pricing is “while supplies last”.

Engadget notes that further confirmation came from none other than Kmart. The retailer has an ad running on its website that notes “The Rumors Are Reality -- New Low Price & a New Exciting PlayStation 3”.

Neither ad lists a date for the pending price cuts.

Kmart has a pre-order page on its website for a "Sony PS3, SLIM" priced at $299.99. The release date is listed as 8/24

I have a few:
I do not own an HDTV, so the Blu-Ray is lost on me.

I already own a Xbox 360, so the library of exclusives would have to be a selling point, and from what I understand, there are a few gems, but only a few.

Well, it's clear I wasn't talking to you. I said those who were waiting for a price drop, those who actually want the console.

In which part did I say I didn't want it?

You said "No excuses, get the console, as everything Sony put into this technical marvel, at that price point it is a steal, & you have to be impressed with it. "

And I've clearly made a few excuses... apparently good ones judging by your reaction. It's hard to see why anyone would want to make this jump right offhand if they already own an Xbox. Don't get me wrong, Heavy Rain and God of War 3 both look promising, but by now $300 still doesn't feel like a bargain, especially when one considers what the Xbox has been and will continue to offer for less money. If I had a HDTV and desperately waned to play MGS4, perhaps, but a price drop like this still makes Sony seem behind the times on what consumers will spend.

To put in further context, Ken Kutaragi said, as the system was being released, that $600 was "too cheap", while he Xbox 360 was $200 cheaper. This new price drop feels no different in the face of sub-$200 Xbox 360s.

Go on and get as ruffled as you want, but I'm just stating the obvious.

TL;DR
It's still the most expensive, ergo this gesture might not work. Either way, I care not, don't spit your hate at me for being unimpressed/indifferent.
