Western Digital ratchets up performance and storage capacicty with its latest Raptor.
Western Digital has developed quite a following in the enthusiast community with its first and second generation Raptor hard drives. The next generation Raptor was announced today with a storage capacity of 150GB. The new drive shares the same 10,000 RPM spindle speed and average seek time of 4.6 ms with its predecessors while also offering up 16MB of cache and a native SATA-150 interface (instead of a PATA to SATA bridge) with NCQ.
The drive is currently available from Western Digital's
for $299. If you care to see how the new drive performs, you can check out a review of the new Raptor at

Still Serial ATA 150?

I wouldn't mind buying this drive or any Raptors. But my only gripe is that it's only SATA 150 and now SATA 300. They should be able to push out SATA 300 by now with higher transfer speeds.

I don't think it's going to be bandwidth limited, I think the drive is still limited by seek time. It outperforms a bunch of SATA 300 drives (and so do the older raptors) in certain scenarios.

Not even with RAID0 will any current hard drive be faster with SATA 300 over 150. Its like PCIe x16, its future bandwidth potential that is not taken advantage of yet.
