InterView sports dual 17-inch LCD screens

EVGA is a company that is closely associated with video cards in the computer world. The company is one of the most well-known firms offering NVIDIA video cards, especially video cards that are overclocked from the factory.

What most enthusiasts won’t associate with EVGA is computer monitors. EVGA has announced a new dual screen LCD called the EVGA InterView. The InterView has dual displays that sport a resolution of 1440 x 900 each and a 1.3-megapixel webcam between the two displays.

One of the coolest features of the InterView is that both of the displays can be rotated 180 degrees and the screen flips the content intelligently so you can rotate a screen to share information with a person on the other side of a desk. The monitors can be mirrored or the desktop can be extended across both screens.

The dual screens are 17-inch units with bezels between the two that puts space between the screens, which could be an issue for users looking to extend the desktop to two screens. Each screen has a pixel pitch of 0.255mm x 0.255mm and a contrast ratio of 500:1 with a brightness of 220CD/m. The average response time is quoted at 8ms. The Interview system weighs 17.46 pounds.

HotHardware has a review of the InterView up and the system carries a retail price of $649.99, a premium over a typical pair of 17-inch LCDs. All of the controls for the LCDs are on the base of the device. The input is DVI only and you have to have a video card that offers dual DVI outputs. That means that notebooks are going to need extra hardware.

Is there ANY advantage in comparison with buying a pair of LCDs?

Maybe - How many video cables are required? Only 1? If so, there may be some application for companies that lease PC's and don't support installing upgraded video cards - which will be most non-tech companies more than 500 employees.

There are some situations when 2 17" would be more productive than 1 24". But I'd take 2 24" for less any day.

It all comes down to corparate policy and vendor management. We don't need the government to screw everything up. Companies are perfectlty capable of wasting their own money with over-broad internal rules. That creates the opportunity for this product.

It'll require 2 cables. I'd have to agree with the folks who don't really see a point in this product, when you can get 2 bigger monitors that swivel for less money.

Yes there is a huge difference between this product and just standard dual LCD displays. That is the auto flip and rotate function.

Awesome! Now that pile of dust behind my monitor can see what I'm doing if I flip the screen.

I suppose it gives the ability for two people to share a view but unfortunately you'll have to point everything out with a mouse instead of just pointing at the screen with your finger.

This is quite the small market they are aiming for.

I can definately see the worth in professional applications - many people I work with have dual monitor setups for CAD/Microstation, but they have old 19" and 21" CRTs as well, and a 17" seems like a step backwards.

At 1440x900 (x2) this would be a poor purchase decision for them. They would be better off with one 1920x1200 monitor or two 1680x1050s than this.

Agreed. Complete ripoff at that price. I don't use a 17" LCD and I don't know anyone who does. 17" is too small and they can suck it if they think they're going to convince anyone that the plastic swiveling stand that they've attached these montiors to is worth $400 (assuming a generous value of $250 for a couple of 17" screens).

You absolutely can....I just bought an Acer 24" from New Egg for about $220 (btw beautiful monitor I love it! No dead pixels either), so for under $450 (before shipping or any applicable taxes) you could get dual 24" that support true 1080p resolution.......or you can add $200 bucks to your cost to have 14" of LESS viewable screen real-estate at the much less 1440 x 900 resolution, but hey you get this nice dual monitor stand on a swivel base....and a web cam (oooooh!)...

Not very useful for dual monitors

Anyone looking for maximum screen real estate is going to want to start out larger than 17". The large gap between the screens would also be annoying for dual monitor though it wouldn't be a problem for running two different computers. Given the size, the gap, and EVGA's target audience of extreme gamers, the only obvious purpose I can see for this is multi-boxing World of Warcraft.

I'd rather save $250 and multibox World of Warcraft on dual 24" (at 1080p) than dual 17" ....I don't need a fancy dual monitor "holder stand thingy-ma-jig" to accomplish dual boxing a game.....if I did that anyway.

If you could also have rotated the screens 90 degrees as well.

So you could flip one from potrait to landscape, both potrait and then flip over.

Now that would have been cool.

...If it used a motor to do all this flipping and rotating...that would be cool (and maybe even worth the price).

On the other hand if you have two separate monitors that can rotate 90 degrees then just set one perpendicular to the other, and rotate it to face you. Then when a customer comes in rotate it 90 degrees to face them.

Not that hot for gaming. I love EVGA's products (I own one of their video cards and motherboards), but I think I'll pass on this one.

just cause it comes from EVGA people shouldn't quickly jump to gaming, this would work well in buisness and for some enthusists

first off you'll never want to use 2 monitors for spaning a game across both screens...it doesn't mater how small your bezel is, your crosshair, or your point of focus will almost always be in the center, and even if you play an rts, the center is still where the camera puts your units in many instances...

so regardless of the bezel or blah blah blah, for gaming you either go single or triple monitor...anyone else is just fooling themselves thinking they have a sweet setup.

for desktop applications, buisness or other things, this is just fine...rarely do you ever span something across both monitors anyway so again, the bezel isn't a big issue...most people out there that are running dual monitors right now i'm pretty sure generally run them as two seperate monitors not cloned or spanned.

anyway for buisness especially team meetings, sales desk and such this would be a great setup...it allows you to work on your screen and swivel around the other screen, even turn it for the audience...thats the big feature of the stand, its not that it holds two monitors, it that it allows you to swivel it around to the two monitors are almost back to back, try that with two seperate monitors, 24" or not, and the stands and cables and such will make it kinda awkward, especially for professional buisness applications.

so anyway, i see a use for this, but sorry, no its not for your WoW.

That's a really nice stand I suppose if it has such a range of motion.

However I'm otherwise unimpressed. I was thinking they had concocted a two monitor solution that had no bezel inbetween the two screens. ie a 2880x900 screen.

I absolutely could not stand having such a huge gap between my dual screens. Perhaps if they did this again, but decreased the bezel to at least the width of one monitor bezel or even thinner, then the premium would be worth it.

I do like how there is only one base however, and the controls sound like they are synced. So a step in the right direction, but not enough.
