What does the iPhone and vampires have in common? Both apparently can be killed by sunlight. Apple says that the following warning can occur when its phone gets exposed to sunlight.  (Source: Apple)
Apple finally responds to reports about its heat issues

Apple has been having plenty of headaches lately with its MacBook Pro displays failing and experiencing distortion.  Worse yet is the iPhone 3G S's quality problems, which include reported overheating and signal issues.  

The overheating was first noted in Apple support forums.  Soon, though, writers at several tech publications -- PC WorldWired, Le Journal Du Geek and The Telegraph -- began to notice the problems on their own phones.  The Le Journal Du Geek writer posted pictures of a white phone and noticed that the overheating was so severe that it colorized the plastic.  The heat tended to turn the case pink or brown.

Now, Apple has at last issued a response and it is assigning the blame for the problem on its users' behavior, sunlight, and on the seasons.  Apple says that leaving the device in a car on a hot day is one possible culprit causing its phone to overheat.  Apparently, like a vampire the phone is no friend of the sun --  Apple states that "leaving it in direct sunlight for extended amounts of time" may cause it to overheat.

Apple lists the use of "GPS tracking in a car on a sunny day or listening to music while in direct sunlight" as two particularly dangerous operations.

According to Apple the following problems are the result of the iPhone's overheating:

  • The device stops charging
  • Display dims
  • Weak cellular signal
  • Temperature warning screen appears with the message "iPhone needs to cool down before you can use it" (see image below)

Apple says that the iPhone is only meant to operate at temperatures between 0º and 35º C (32º to 95º F) and be stored at temperatures between -20º and 45º C (-4º to 113º F).  Unfortunately, this is much lower than the temperatures experienced in much of the American South and Southwest.

Based on Apple's stance it seems there's no immediate solution for iPhone owners.  Apple seems unwilling to agree that its hardware needs revision to deal with the problem, instead assigning the blame elsewhere -- the sun, heat, and summer weather.  And that means as summer temperatures heat up, users are left to prepare for the worst -- their phones beginning to fail.

Its not Apples fault, its the Consumer that buys their iCrap products and then get on chat boards or comment sections of Apple news stories to "Brag" about how good Apple is, well reality just struck AGAIN, they arent that good, they never where.

So i am glad this is happening, and when Apple decides to release a new iPhone model with features that could have easily been added with a simple firmware update for FREE, expect it to be more of the same. I can see it now "iPhone 3G X, having touchscreen issues, dropped calls, heating issues"

Apples response:

This is NOT a iPhone problem it is a user problems please avoid the following:

Touchscreen:
* Avoid doritos
* Keep fingures at room tempature
* Do not put hands in pockets
* Do not pick your noses
* Use Apple iWash to clean your hands its just $29.99


Dropped Calls:
* Dont move when you make a call
* Use your right hand to hold the phone, left hand might have fragments of metal that will conflict with the phone
* Buy the All New iPhone 3G LDC (Less Dropped Calls


Heating Issues:
* Dont have the phone near, the sun, car, kitchen, pocket, hands, face. Unless your in Antartica
* Buy the All New iPhone 3G 212 °F


Buy a Palm Pre, it does the same things as the iPhone, except Palm is loyal to its cosumers and lets them know of problems and blames it on facts, unlike Apple.

I guess you got screwed by Apple and my post touched a sensitive spot, you deserve the hurt you feel my friend!

Dont take it out on me because you bought a crappy product.

Atleast Palm ADMITS the issue that does not blame YOU the consumer you moron!

I did say that Palm is the same as Apple,, both phones heat up and have problems but one blames you the other does not.

Actually no, I'm not an AT&T customer and I don't own an iPhone. I'm on Verizon and own an LG Dare and amazingly, I know enough not to let my cell phone sit in a broiling hot car or in direct sunlight. Common sense. Something you lack.

Furthermore, the so-called response that DailyTech wrote about is nothing new. In fact that Apple Page linked in the article was posted by Apple months ago.

Apparently not enough to know that in a hot summer day with a temp of 90+ the crappy phone would heat up and its not directly in the sun and it would fail, your such an idiot.

Stop replying and linking useless sites, Apple is a crappy company, your a bitter Apple fan boy get over it.

If this were the case then, we'd have thousands and thousands of reports of people that live in desert and tropical climates complaining of their iphones overheating.

Yet amazingly, we don't. You are a total moron, sir. Incapable of even the slightest bit of reasoning skills.

Apple employee? Nice try but now you're just making a fool out of yourself. Anyone with half a brain would know that by "We" I meant us, as in those that visit DT.

And speaking of the truth, I posted two links for you that you fail to recognize. So you sir, Mr. Moron, are the one failing to realize the truth.

And that truth is 1.) Despite this article, Apple never made an official statement on the overheating issues and is by no means pointing the finger at the consumer (no where, absolutely no where, did Apple say this) and 2.) The so-called competition in the form of the Palm Pre is having it's own overheating issues.

Apple sucks because they're doing plain old better than their PC counterparts in personal media players, laptops, and phone sales. Yes, they suck.
