Apple has sent emails to developers inviting them to try a new OS v3.1 SDK. The new OS update will add improved voice dialing, pasting phone numbers, better video editing, improved OpenGL, and faster boot times.  (Source: Apple)

Apple already is gearing up for a new OS update

It didn't take Apple long after the release of its iPhone OS v3.0 to begin preparing for the first major update to the new OS.  Apple has announced the availability of a beta of its OS v3.1 along with a 3.1 version SDK, for its developers.

IPhone OS v3.1 will improve video editing, one of the hot new features on the iPhone 3G S.  The 3G S allows users to edit videos by selecting or deselecting series of frames, however, the edits automatically overwrote the original.  Now the system prompts the user with the option to save a copy, when saving your editing work.

Arranging icons on the home screen also has had a cool vibration effect added.  Another little OS level tweak is the boot time -- the phone now boots considerably faster.

Another nice addition is the inclusion of paste into the dialing screen.  Users can now paste phone numbers into the dial box.  Alphanumeric numbers, such as 1-800-MY-APPLE, will be properly converted to phone numbers.

MMS functionality is supported in the beta, though it is still not supported on the network by AT&T.  The beta's final major addition is the ability to use Voice Control via a Bluetooth headset.

The SDK for the OS update includes APIs to add video editing to applications, opening the door for fancy third-party video editing suites.  The SDK also includes improved versions of the OpenGL and Quartz engines (Quartz is the Mac OS X graphics presentation engine).

There is no official word when the new OS update will be released to the public, but expect it to land within the next month.

New OS fixes power management as well?

Can we all assume other issues will also be addressed such as the power management?

~Reading a lot of reports about overheating and short battery life. Doesn't seem like something Apple would admit however, just a thought¿

Apple is like the company people love to hate... or.. hate to love on DT.

" WTF ! A fucking update already ? Motherfuck... Apple and their updates.. fixing shit. Son of a bitch!"

But seriously yeah, the power management is a bit off on my Gen1 iPhone. I turned off "Push" stuff and it seems to have improved bat life, but obviously I shouldn't have to do that. Also I did it to receive calls I was missing alot. I dont know whats up with that. Looking forward to 3.1

My regular iPhone 3G gets stupendously hot when streaming video over WiFi. I noticed today watching BBC iPlayer trying to get out of the office and away from people pestering me to do things for them on a lunch break...

Glad you bought it up though, am surprised it has been so overlooked (and no articles have mentioned it being fixed in this beta release) - sadly, I imagine it won't be, because as with any improvements they make (whether it was originally their fault or not) you'd have heard the fanfare and seen the smug-aura months ago.

"Nowadays, security guys break the Mac every single day. Every single day, they come out with a total exploit, your machine can be taken over totally. I dare anybody to do that once a month on the Windows machine." -- Bill Gates
