HTC Hero won't hit the U.S. until later in 2009
HTC held a launch event in Europe today that saw the firm unveil the not-so-closely kept secret handset called the HTC Hero. The Hero is an Android-powered smartphone with a deeply customized user interface. The phone should give Android fans something to be excited about.
HTC is no stranger to Android-powered phones; it is the firm that built the T-Mobile G1 that has
sold over a million units
so far. The new
has a 3.2-inch HVGA display and is optimized for the web. The screen has a special anti-fingerprint coating to prevent smudges and make the display last longer.
A 5-megapixel camera is built into the phone and the phones storage is expandable via microSD cards. A search function searches multiple sources to find people and information including Twitter, contact lists, emails and other areas of the phone.
Other handset features include AGPS, a digital compass, a gravity sensor, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The phone has 512MB of internal storage, 288MB of RAM, and uses a 528MHz Qualcomm processor. Power is from a 1350mAh battery and the handset already supports Flash.
One of the more interesting features of the phone is that it allows you to organize the phone and choose the content displayed on the home screen from sources like Twitter feeds, weather, and world-times. The phone also allows users to create screens that are optimized for specific uses and times like work or play.
The phone will be available in black or silver colors and has an angled lower section to make it more comfortable against the face and bring the mic closer to the lips. The Hero will debut first in Europe this July and will come to Asia later this summer and then to America later this year. There is no word on pricing at this time.
