We could have gotten away with the iPhone locking, if it wasn't for you meddling kids!

An old saying goes "the truth will set you free".  Perhaps the phrase "or really good unlocking software" can be added to this old adage to modernize it.  After all, that's just what iPhone jailbreakers have been hard at work trying to do -- to set your iPhone free of its AT&T and Apple imposed SIM fetters.

The previous iPhone 3G had been SIM unlocked by the iPhone Dev Team (certainly no relation to Apple), which offered a software called yellowsn0w that made short work of the lock.  Another year has brought another locked iPhone and the team has once again been hard at work.

The team will release a new software program ultrasn0w, which will be capable of unlocking all iPhones, including models running the new OS, v3.0, and the new iPhone 3G S.  The release of the software will coincide with the release of the iPhone 3G S on Friday.

The team is not revealing the black magic they've used to defeat Apple's latest SIM restrictions for fear that Apple will issue a patch or fix to block the unlock.  However, it’s clear that they must have a mole within the ranks of Apple's OS beta testers, as they've reportedly been working on the fix for some time.

On Friday, if all goes according to the plan, the iPhone 3G S will be liberated to run on any network.  Until then you can dream of iPhone freedom and watch this video of the unlock.

t-mobile is GSM. Hypothetically could I do UMA calls on this thing if it were unlocked and I slapped in a t-mobile SIM?
