Metal Gear Series is no longer a PlayStation 3 exclusive

The next installment of the Metal Gear series will be coming to multiple platforms one of which will be the Xbox 360. Since the days of the original PlayStation the Metal Gear series has launched on a Sony console and has consistently turned out to be blockbuster hits. Metal Gear Solid 4 was no exception as it had sold over 4.5 million copies by February of this year.

The new Metal Gear will be called Metal Gear Solid: Rising and will star Raiden, the slightly whiny androgynous blonde haired star of Metal Gear Solid 2. Before launch, fans were led to believe Metal Gear Solid 2 would naturally feature the star of the original Metal Gear Solid, Solid Snake, based on trailers and playable demos. In a twist that surprised many, Hideo Kojima had chosen to make Solid Snake playable for only a small portion of the game. The rest of the game starred Raiden and fan opinions were decidedly mixed.

In Metal Gear Solid 4, Raiden reappeared not as a confused soldier with issues but as a cyborg mech annihilating ninja that talked a lot less. Opinions of Raiden naturally improved and it appears it is this version of Raiden that will star in the next Metal Gear based on current images available on the web.

Metal Gear Solid: Rising will be coming to the Xbox 360, the PlayStation 3, and the PC. A launch date was not announced. The Metal Gear series becoming multi-platform is significant because the PlayStation 3 loses one of its premier exclusive titles. When the PlayStation 3 was struggling to gain any momentum, Metal Gear Solid 4 was one of its few exclusive blockbuster hits that could be considered a system seller.

In order for the PS3 to lose something, the game would first have to be announced as an exclusive. The Metal Gear series has appeared on many platforms: MSX2, NES, PSX, PC, xbox, PS2, PSP, PS3. It is not surprising for a new Metal Gear title to appear on multiple platforms.

I believe this is similar to Sony having exclusive Final Fantasy game rights.

The main FF titles have been exclusive to the playstation since the ps1, so that was a huge exclusive loss, but MGS has never been completely exclusive to the playstation platform. I mean, there already is a metal gear on the xbox.

This is just stupid consolewar tripe. Will it be beneficial to microsoft? definitely, but then again it depends on how much they've loaned/paid for the project. will it damage sony? not likely looking at their current lineup of releases.

I beg your pardon, sir, but Final Fantasy VII and VIII both received windows ports.

this is true, but it doesn't really change how big of a loss FF exclusivity (nonMMO) was to the playstation franchise, and it had been exclusive to the playstation for almost a decade.

It was never exclusive to the Playstation franchise, which is why I made my original post.

it was never exclusively bought out, if that's what you mean, but it has stuck with the playstation for a very long time.

I am pretty sure I have 3 Nintendo FF games that haven't been around all that long. They were released long after the entire "cutscene over gameplay" revolution FF went through after 6.

I wouldn't consider the Crystal Chronicles as a core part of the FF franchise, but an off-shoot. Which was part of a deal between square-enix and nintendo.

Are you just looking for something to complain about? As for the current Generation of Consoles, it was a PS3 exclusive. It's quite obvious that a story about an upcoming game would be in reference to the current generation of consoles. Is there a Metal Gear game on 360 or Wii (besides a possible old version of one in the arcade). Up until this, the current "next gen" console to have a full blown new Metal Gear game was PS3. I don't think the writer even said this was "announced" as an exclusive, just pointing out the fact that till this point, you could only get it on PS3 (in this round of consoles). So do you think Sony doesn't care that a new Metal Gear is coming to 360?? I am sure they're very unhappy about this.

If you had read the quote, you would see that it says "SERIES"
The series is not a sony exclusive. In reference to only the current gen of consoles, there is only 1 game. So there would not be an exclusivity of a "series" in that case either.
But honestly I don't think it will make much of a difference, remember when bioshock came to the PS3...

The writer said, as a "Series" it had launched first on a PS console since the the PS console has been around (not sure if that is 100% true), and that the latest of the "Series is launching on all platforms". The quote you mention, refering to the PS3 (and not earlier systems) tells me the writter is refering to the latest gen of consoles. I guess it can be taken either way, but the person I was replying too seemed to take offense, and suggested the writter was anouncing this as an all time PS exclusive (where I didn't take the at all from the original article, hence my question of trying to find something to complain about."

It doesn't have to be announced as exclusive for Sony to lose something.

The various Metal Gears during the PlayStation 1/2 days went to competitor consoles after launch. Sony loses a game that has traditionally launched on a Sony console

Games that are ported have less hype, less impact, and less value when they move to another console after launch. I think only launch exclusivity is what counts.

maybe on 5 DVD discs...

"Ok Snake, now is the time when you have to switch to disc 2".... "Oh yeah this is on the Playstation 3 with Bluray, you don't have to switch discs"
