If you've been waiting for Duke Nukem Forever, and still had faith in the project, this news will sadden you

After numerous delays and years of hype in the gaming community, it looks like 3D Realms will never release Duke Nukem Forever, as the game studio has run out of money and will close its doors.

"We can confirm that our relationship with 3D Realms for Duke Nukem Forever was a publishing arrangement, which did not include ongoing funds for development of the title," explained publisher Take-Two.

Duke Nukem Forever has been in development for more than 12 years and was a follow-up to the popular 3D video game released by 3D Realms in 1996.  The studio's games were popular more than a decade ago, but simply couldn't match game studio development in the 21st century, according to video game industry analysts.

The studio also worked on Commander Keen and Major Stryker, which were popular but never reached the same level as Duke Nukem and Wolfenstein 3D.

Take-Two and other studios involved in the project noted that the game may not be fully dead, but after such a long delay in development, it's highly unlikely the game will ever hit store shelves.

"Development of the Duke Nukem Trilogy is continuing as planned and further announcements about upcoming games will be made in the near future," according to a statement issued by Apogee Software.

News of the studio's closure is especially ironic as 3D Realms recently celebrated the 17th anniversary of its release of Wolfenstein 3D, which first hit the market in 1992.

This story is entirely yesterday's news (well yesterday's rumor and today's actual news it seems).

3DR is closing shop but SUPPOSEDLY work on Duke will carry on. They'd be stupid to kill the IP that is Duke.

No that's the Duke trilogy, for handhelds, not DNF

That's what's surprised me about this whole thing - given how hard it is to come up with a successful franchise, you would think the Duke brand would have been worth getting something out somewhere.

Ah well, I really enjoyed this game and its sense of humor, just have to retain that tiny smidgen of hope that, who knows, maybe something will still come of it.

But didn't we get a REPORT recently that DNF was almost finished.... only 20 more items to finish out of 600~800.

If so close to going gold, this would be stupid.

Also... in generally, they should have done DNF years ago, so what that tech changes. They could have done 2-3 more Duke Nukem games by now and made money.

If we can believe George yes, DNF would've been finished by this year given enough funds to finish the project. I'm not sure if George was telling the truth all along though.

I can think of another scenario playing out, if given George is telling the truth. It would not be a hoax per se, but the biggest ruse in gaming history to screw Take Two out of their share. It's all wishful thinking at this point though.

In the end... screw them. According to that "chair" story (if true) and to a degree... 12 years to develop a game? It can be believable that it was all nothing but marketing.

But after a while... who cares? In the real world, its easy to make a Duke Nukem game. (A) Kill Aliens (B) Say something stupid, but funny (C) Have strippers. Easy. Dozens or hundreds of FPS have come out since DN-3D.

I won't lose sleep over it. If there was a real game out there and it comes out, fine - we'll check it out. But otherwise... it doesn't really matter. They shot themselves in the foot screwing around for fun, etc... in the end, they lose, out of money and business and look like retards.
