Fujitsu launches 200GB SATA mobile drive albeit with a 4200RPM spindle speed

Fujitsu has announced that it has developed a new 200GB 2.5" Serial ATA hard drive for mobile applications. The MHV2200BT is the world's first 200GB mobile drive and features a 4200RPM spindle speed, best-in-class power consumption, whisper quiet operation and Native Command Queuing (NCQ).

"Fujitsu has focused heavily on R&D to establish itself as the leader in the 2.5" SATA hard disk drive space," said Joel Hagberg, vice president, marketing and business development, Fujitsu Computer Products of America. "We delivered the industry's first 2.5" SATA hard disk drive in January 2004, the 160GB 2.5" offering slightly less than a year ago and now, with the MHV2200BT, we have again illustrated that we are committed to being a leader in this market."

Fujitsu is expected to start shipping the new MHV2200BT in the third quarter. Pricing has not yet been announced. Fujitsu stated during CES that it expected to use perpendicular recording to reach 200GB by the end of 2006 and it looks as though they have hit that mark.

Density is what really matters.

7 years ago, the best 7200 RPM IDE drives could sustain a data rate of approximately 12MB's a second (if i recall correctly). Now look where we are !
