Wii console sales are now above 50 million globally

Nintendo has been making a big push with its WiiWare game and application download service for the Wii. Over 200 programs have been developed, although most are not available in North America or Europe.

One of the biggest complaints has been the lack of storage available. The Wii only has 512 MB of internal NAND flash storage, and many of Nintendo's best WiiWare customers were forced to transfer their programs onto 2GB SD cards or delete unused programs in order to make room for new ones.

While all programs that were bought are available for redownloading later, the inconvenience and awkwardness of the experience left many customers disappointed.

Nintendo has now released System Menu 4.0, a major update to the Wii's operating system. It now supports SDHC cards up to a maximum of 32GB, integrating it into the Wii so that Virtual Console or WiiWare games can be played directly off external flash storage.

There is a new SD Card menu accessible from the main menu, next to the Wii button. It was designed to facilitate transfers of files and Channels between the Wii console and SD or SDHC cards.

One of the fastest cards SDHC cards available is the SanDisk Extreme III 30MB/s Edition. It is available in 2, 4, 8, and 16 GB versions. There are many cheap SD and SDHC cards available, but many users are choosing faster flash storage rather than large capacities. Most of the fastest SDHC cards are used for digital cameras, and users who are purchasing larger and faster storage may have several cards leftover that they can use as storage for the Wii.

Sales of the Wii console have exceeded 50 million globally, while the Wii Fit has sold over 15 million units.

RE: So the Wii catches up to 2007?

Stevo,

You, think hd graphics are important,

the masses do not, big distinction.

also you cannot include the pc into the console argument, because its not a game console, the only thing that matters in the console generation is units sold, software sold

individually, the wii is demolishing the ps3 and the 360 in terms of hardware bought, and software bought, annnnd accessories bought. combined, sometime this year, the wii -unless it's sales tank and so far for 3 years, it hasn't- the wii will pass the combined ps3-360 user base.

attach rate, the most DECEIVING statistic released for gaming consoles- usually the worst performing consoles have the Better attach rate...the reason,, poor sales= smaller user base.

if your console sells exceptionally well, the attach rate will be lower due to the fact that your console sells...exceptionally well.

ps3- user base of ~20 million world wide.. game comes out sells 2 million copies = 1 in 10 people owning the console bought the game. this would increase the attach rate by 0.1

wii- user base of ~48 million world wide(i know its more than that)..game comes out and sells 3 million copies= 1 in 16 bought. this would increase the attach rate by 0.06

using JUST attach rate figure given which game would you say sold better- not knowing sales numbers or user base you would say the ps3 while the wii did better.

that is the problem with attach rate, with a Well selling platform, the size of the userbase drives DOWN the attachrate, even if they are actually selling more software units, the enourmous number of the userbase does not reflect in the actually attach rate

and yes the playstation 2 was an exception due the fact that it was so dominant in the field and even then the xbox and gamecube almost EQUALLED its attach rate despite both of them being outsold 2 to 1.

ps2 ~10
xbox & gamecube ~9 (each)

if a console maker is touting attach rate for software sales, they are doing poorly in the overall scheme of things.

lets take oh i know street fighter 4- ps3 & 360,, it SOLD better on the 360, yet the ps3's ATTACH rate is better...

If we were to make the distinction that those who wanted HD Graphics went for the 360, PS3 and PC, then yes most people do agree HD graphics are more important, combined those 3 platforms outsell the Wii.

Lies, It's the games.

Thats not accurate, if the Wii sells 50 million consoles and has an attach rate of 1, and the Xbox 360 sells 20 million consoles but has an attachment rate of 3, then the Xbox 360 has sold more games, plain and simple.
