Wii console sales are now above 50 million globally

Nintendo has been making a big push with its WiiWare game and application download service for the Wii. Over 200 programs have been developed, although most are not available in North America or Europe.

One of the biggest complaints has been the lack of storage available. The Wii only has 512 MB of internal NAND flash storage, and many of Nintendo's best WiiWare customers were forced to transfer their programs onto 2GB SD cards or delete unused programs in order to make room for new ones.

While all programs that were bought are available for redownloading later, the inconvenience and awkwardness of the experience left many customers disappointed.

Nintendo has now released System Menu 4.0, a major update to the Wii's operating system. It now supports SDHC cards up to a maximum of 32GB, integrating it into the Wii so that Virtual Console or WiiWare games can be played directly off external flash storage.

There is a new SD Card menu accessible from the main menu, next to the Wii button. It was designed to facilitate transfers of files and Channels between the Wii console and SD or SDHC cards.

One of the fastest cards SDHC cards available is the SanDisk Extreme III 30MB/s Edition. It is available in 2, 4, 8, and 16 GB versions. There are many cheap SD and SDHC cards available, but many users are choosing faster flash storage rather than large capacities. Most of the fastest SDHC cards are used for digital cameras, and users who are purchasing larger and faster storage may have several cards leftover that they can use as storage for the Wii.

Sales of the Wii console have exceeded 50 million globally, while the Wii Fit has sold over 15 million units.

The Wii isn't meant to be a real games console anyway. It's more of a toy for people who aren't really gamers. My 63 year old aunt just got one and she loves it. Never played a game in her life before that point.

the wii is the ONLY pure game console this generation.

so it does not do high definition resolution, who cares besides the 15-35yr old male demographic, i don't, i care to have fun playing games made for me, and my kids playing games for them, and they do, that is the important part that nintendo did correctly this generation that the other 2 missed out on, for pure fun games, the wii is BETTER than the other two. the other two do have more violent games geared towards the 15-35yr old male, but they are a small segment of the gaming population, the biggest segment of the gaming population(for pc's) is..FEMALE-35+ if i remember correctly.

the wii has plenty of quality games to play, the ps3 has plenty of quality games to play, the 360 has plenty of quality games to play. the consumer - due to the interface/controller for the wii has said.

HD graphics are not important, interactivity, immersion, intuitive controls Are important and that is is going to be taught in schools in the future when they discuss disruptive marketing.

i have a Wii, i play Very well done mature games on the platform- Madworld, RE4 RE:UC, HOTD:overkill, and will be playing the upcoming games as well..i also play the OTHER quality games on the wii. that is what it is for, playing Games.

Actually "Gamers" actually make a significant portion of the gaming market, if (Unrealistically) we were to combine the "Hardcore Gamers" (Which includes the Xbox, PS3 and the venerable PC) then that would equate to more "Gaming Systems Sold" this generation in comparison to just the Wii (Aka. "Casual Gamers") - However that's un-realistic, my Granny rushed out and bought an Xbox 360 when she discovered she could download/pay then play "Arcade" games like Bejeweled, Zuma etc'.

Then you have the fact that the PC/PS3/Xbox 360 has allot of cross-platform games, for instance if a developer releases a game on all 3 platforms they are reaching a potential consumer base larger than the Wii itself, hence more sales, hence they can still stretch there artistic talents in the graphics department.

I believe HD "Resolutions" are important. (Especially if NO Anti-Aliasing is performed), Playing a game at a 480P resolution when you have a 32 - 42" LCD sitting only a few feet away from you on a desk is painful.

Increased hardware performance allows for more interactivity, in the form of Physics, Artificial Intelligence, larger worlds, more dynamic game worlds, they all take a tole on performance.

I have a PC/Xbox 360/PS3.

Resident Evil 5 is highly addictive, and looks awesome to boot! I got it for the Xbox 360 a few days ago, the "online" features were well done, the story line was engaging as well. (Haven't completed it yet though...)

Oh yeah I forgot to add, that despite having less consoles sold for the 360 and the PS3, there game attachment rates are still higher, hence game developers get more chances of there games being sold, and thus a larger budget to develop the next game.

Stevo,

You, think hd graphics are important,

the masses do not, big distinction.

also you cannot include the pc into the console argument, because its not a game console, the only thing that matters in the console generation is units sold, software sold

individually, the wii is demolishing the ps3 and the 360 in terms of hardware bought, and software bought, annnnd accessories bought. combined, sometime this year, the wii -unless it's sales tank and so far for 3 years, it hasn't- the wii will pass the combined ps3-360 user base.

attach rate, the most DECEIVING statistic released for gaming consoles- usually the worst performing consoles have the Better attach rate...the reason,, poor sales= smaller user base.

if your console sells exceptionally well, the attach rate will be lower due to the fact that your console sells...exceptionally well.

ps3- user base of ~20 million world wide.. game comes out sells 2 million copies = 1 in 10 people owning the console bought the game. this would increase the attach rate by 0.1

wii- user base of ~48 million world wide(i know its more than that)..game comes out and sells 3 million copies= 1 in 16 bought. this would increase the attach rate by 0.06

using JUST attach rate figure given which game would you say sold better- not knowing sales numbers or user base you would say the ps3 while the wii did better.

that is the problem with attach rate, with a Well selling platform, the size of the userbase drives DOWN the attachrate, even if they are actually selling more software units, the enourmous number of the userbase does not reflect in the actually attach rate

and yes the playstation 2 was an exception due the fact that it was so dominant in the field and even then the xbox and gamecube almost EQUALLED its attach rate despite both of them being outsold 2 to 1.

ps2 ~10
xbox & gamecube ~9 (each)

if a console maker is touting attach rate for software sales, they are doing poorly in the overall scheme of things.

lets take oh i know street fighter 4- ps3 & 360,, it SOLD better on the 360, yet the ps3's ATTACH rate is better...

If we were to make the distinction that those who wanted HD Graphics went for the 360, PS3 and PC, then yes most people do agree HD graphics are more important, combined those 3 platforms outsell the Wii.

Lies, It's the games.

Thats not accurate, if the Wii sells 50 million consoles and has an attach rate of 1, and the Xbox 360 sells 20 million consoles but has an attachment rate of 3, then the Xbox 360 has sold more games, plain and simple.

I don't believe someone can still make these types of comments. The Wii not a "real" games console? My God you really just be a hardcore fanboy or just really really hate something that 50million people had purchased worldwide to have fun with.

Seriously, please elaborate why you think the Wii isn't for gaming?

b/c the wii is obviously for automatically putting butter on your bread. thats why the controller is flat, to get better spread.
