Wii console sales are now above 50 million globally

Nintendo has been making a big push with its WiiWare game and application download service for the Wii. Over 200 programs have been developed, although most are not available in North America or Europe.

One of the biggest complaints has been the lack of storage available. The Wii only has 512 MB of internal NAND flash storage, and many of Nintendo's best WiiWare customers were forced to transfer their programs onto 2GB SD cards or delete unused programs in order to make room for new ones.

While all programs that were bought are available for redownloading later, the inconvenience and awkwardness of the experience left many customers disappointed.

Nintendo has now released System Menu 4.0, a major update to the Wii's operating system. It now supports SDHC cards up to a maximum of 32GB, integrating it into the Wii so that Virtual Console or WiiWare games can be played directly off external flash storage.

There is a new SD Card menu accessible from the main menu, next to the Wii button. It was designed to facilitate transfers of files and Channels between the Wii console and SD or SDHC cards.

One of the fastest cards SDHC cards available is the SanDisk Extreme III 30MB/s Edition. It is available in 2, 4, 8, and 16 GB versions. There are many cheap SD and SDHC cards available, but many users are choosing faster flash storage rather than large capacities. Most of the fastest SDHC cards are used for digital cameras, and users who are purchasing larger and faster storage may have several cards leftover that they can use as storage for the Wii.

Sales of the Wii console have exceeded 50 million globally, while the Wii Fit has sold over 15 million units.

the best thing to cash in on the Wii right now?

a wireless TURBO classic controller. it's becomming increasingly difficult to find quality wireless GCN controllers as well. both of these would sell very well and will continue to do so in the future--simply based on the kinds of retro games becoming available.

in fact, the only reason i haven't purchased street-fighter for virtua console yet...is because i love my SNES programpad so much (i.e. programmable buttons).

only 4 things keep me from giving my old systems away:

1. not all of my games are availble on virtua console--YET...

2. there's no current methodology for using a game-genine with the virtua console....YET...

3. there's no programpads or something similar.

4. there's no GBA player for the wii (reason enough to keep my gamecube--in addition to 1/2 games that don't play on the wii).

i sincerely hope nintendo adds gba/gb color/gb/ds/etc. play capability to the wii in the future. it seems fitting to at least have GBA support--since the new DS does NOT feature GBA support. i kept (and used) my super gameboy until the GBA player came out.

Eh? You have GC games that don't work on the Wii? That's really surprising, especially since from all I've read, the API is the same.

could be a concidence with nintendo's morality policies:

bmx: xxx doesn't work.

i'm also waiting for an update to SDXC compatibility.

it's SO much better to take your games library to your next console on 1-2 sd cards; rather than keeping stores of cartridges & disks around.

biggest developers missing from virtua console?

lucasarts & RARE

just one more reason i DISPISE microsoft--they're preventing n64 games from being released for VC because they now own rare.

we could also use more jaleco (rushing beat), sunsoft (blaster master, afterburner), konami (contra 1, metal warriors), tengen (shinobi, gauntlet), midway (crusin' exotica, smash tv, trog).

i think nintendo should hire me to head up the virtua console games release division. releasing 1 game per week is WAY, WAY too slow.

You mean the same Microsoft that has been fine with RARE doing GBA and DS games?

Somehow, I find it very hard to believe Microsoft is against bringing in new revenue on ten-year-old games with effectively zero new costs. Are you absolutely sure Nintendo doesn't have a hand in this decision?

has donkey kong 64 been released for virtua console?

yeah. that's right. microsoft has decided to take its ball & go home. better to bring in a few $$$ less in revenue--than to give even MORE of a sales advantage to your competition.
