Punch-Out!!, The Conduit, G.I. Joe, and more...

Nintendo has sent out its latest release schedule of games for the Nintendo Wii and DS/DSi.

Several highly anticipated games are on the list, including Punch-Out!!, a sequel to the classic Nintendo boxing game, that will be released on May 18. 2K Sports will try to preempt Nintendo by releasing Don King Boxing on March 31.

The Conduit is a first person shooter featuring a new graphics engine optimized for the Wii.  Previews of the game have shown very high quality footage.

Games based on upcoming movies are also prominent on the list, including G.I. JOE:  The Rise of Cobra, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 10
from EA Sports will have an early debut this year in June, rather than the annual August release.

LucasArts will release Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings for both the Wii and DS, while Rockstar Games will have Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars out on March 17 exclusively for the DS.

Several other games, such as The Godfather 2 and Wii Sports Resort are missing from the list as release dates have slipped or are not ready to be disclosed.

While the Wii is destroying the other two consoles in hardware sales, software sales are much closer. The software market is still very much so a race between the three consoles, and Nintendo far from dominates this category. Both the PS3 and 360 have a better attach rate which means they don't have to have as many consoles on the market to achieve comparable software sales.

Furthermore cross platform games available for 360 and PS3, is an added advantage, making the available market larger than the wii. (i.e add up hardware sales of PS3 and 360, and you will find it has a larger userbase than the wii).

That probably explains why the PS3 and XBox are not top of the software sales charts again.

Estimated Total software sales from VGTchartz:

Wii: 271,295,120
360: 223,142,135
Ps3: 119,638,057

or weekly sales (Average sales based on time console has been out)

Wii: 2,438,335
360: 1,387,360
PS3: 961,071

Now these stats are not perfect, there is definately a margin of error involved, but it paints the same picture as what I previously explained. Together the PS3 and 360 have around the same amount of sales as the Wii, and as I mentioned the crossplatform market for the ps3/360 is around the same as the entire wii market. I also must point out that these stats include wiisports which to date has over 40 million copies sold as it comes bundled.

the difference beeing the PS3 and xbox360 where sold with a loss from the very beginning, while the Wii was sold with a profit. they where banking on a high attach rate from day 1, so that it's "a close race" pretty much means a loss for sony and microsoft.

business wise, nintendo's won this round hands down. but then again that was their model and their gamble, and they got it right this time. consider it payback for the 2 generations of playstation ownage. the next generation, or i should say innovation, will be interesting to see.
