Ballmer said at MWC 2009 Windows Mobile 7 will come in 2010

When it comes to operating systems for computers, Microsoft holds the vast majority of the market even when there are free alternatives like Linux. However, when it comes to mobile operating systems for smartphones, Microsoft isn’t nearly as strong.

WMPoweruser reports that Microsoft's Windows Mobile operating system is in third place behind Symbian and RIM. Microsoft is looking to gain some market share in the smartphone arena though and is saying that it will increase spending on the mobile OS.

Microsoft reportedly spends $900 million per year and devotes 2,000 employees to its Windows Mobile OS, but the mobile operating system is still what Microsoft terms a "somewhat unprofitable" business. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said in a keynote at Mobile World Congress that Windows Mobile 7 would be coming next year.

Ballmer also stated that Microsoft would not be entering into the phone market and preferred the licensing model it currently uses. That means any Zune fans hoping to see a Zune phone challenge the iPhone will be unhappy.

Ballmer also said in the keynote that Microsoft has plans to extend revenue-making opportunities to services. Ballmer also touched on other things during his keynote and mentioned that the software giant was prevented from bundling Live services with PCs running Windows because of a Consent Decree resulting from a decade old antitrust ruling.

At MWC 2009, Microsoft did announce Windows Mobile 6.5 and Ballmer did say that the expansion of the smartphone segment into the whole phone segment should help Windows Mobile to grow despite the poor economy. Many consumers are opting for smartphones that can serve more than one purpose during the slow economy, leading to continued growth.

Microsoft sees Windows and Windows Mobile as two sides of the same coin according to Ballmer and going forward the two operating systems will share even more technology. Specifically, features like the browser, presentation surface, and possibly the kernel will be shared.

Wake up! Q3 has come and gone! Q4 paints a much better picture as the recession really starts to come into play.

And by the way you are correct they are not third anymore, as of Q4 they are second ;)

Dont worry about what others say or think. Just keep defending Apple at all costs. Keep up the good fight. Someday it will get you ... something I am sure =)

Do you have any idea how ridiculous you sound? The CEO of a company can lie about their Quarterly results, but thats how you end up in Jail. Nither Jobs or Balmer would risk their careers over quarterly results. Microsoft's numbers are almost the same as last year, so I don't know why they would lie about not gaining traction, and I sure as heck don't see why Jobs would release numbers showing that iPhone sales are declining vs Q3 results.

Jobs was caught lying about his iPod Touch being the first MP3 player with internet capabilities (Archos has done it first actually) and nobody put him in jail. A little lie like "forgetting" about the market you're talking about (US vs global) and stuff like that - it never hurts a CEO. It's not a "big" lie, why bother with CEO replacement then? If the company marketing department "exaggerates" its product's features a little and nobody gets in jail for that, why CEO can't follow the same route? ;-)

Where did I bash Apple?

I personally think the Iphone is the best thing to happen to smartphone UI's ever! They forced everyone else to raise their game, a HUGE step.

Uh-oh, be careful here, your ratng is already climbing down. Don't post such obvious pro-Apple statements on DT or you will be rated to -1 just like me.

Debunking a few ancient urban myths that some WinPC fanatics like to spread around? You call it Apple defense? I'm just having fun with a few lie-spreading braindead idiots here, like SavagePotato, chicko, fsardis and others.

I'm doing just the same with similar Apple zealots when I see them, but they don't happen to appear on this forum too often, and when they do they get modded down to -1 sooner than I see their posts so there's not much work for me left :-)

I look like Apple zealot just because this forum is about 95% of WinPC zealots. It's an honor to be called "Apple defender" or "Apple zealot" when the person calling you is a clear WinPC fanatic. This only proves that I am objective and unbiased. When I see SavagePotato and chicko and people like them stop bashing me - it means I became fanatical and biased, time to reevaluate my position and double check if I may be wrong somewhere. Very simple logic, eh?

Wake up and learn how to read market data. The numbers you listed are for Q3 ONLY... I assume the number quoted in the article was for world wide market share to date. Nice try though.

Wake up and learn that my Q3 table is the most recent more or less official data about smartphone OS market share, and not just unproven rumors about Q4 which my old Apple bashing friends try to push here.

By omnicronx on 2/25/2009 3:42:00 PM , Rating: 2
Apple and MS have already released Q4 stats, these are not really unproven numbers.. Furthermore the pic you linked specifically says 'Source: Canalys estimates', how is that 'offical data'.

By Pirks on 2/25/2009 3:51:45 PM , Rating: 2
I don't see how it's less official than your info. At least it's third party so I trust it more.

Hey I'm not the one whining about the results being 'offical', you are. I know what you posted is correct, but its for the wrong quarter, and thus no longer relevent.

Well that's a given, given your pro apple stance, why wouldn't you trust a source that proves your point?

By Pirks on 2/25/2009 4:22:15 PM , Rating: 2
'Cause I don't trust CEOs as much as I trust third parties.

By Smilin on 2/26/2009 12:53:23 AM , Rating: 2
Trust to be accurate or trust to be honest?

A CEO will be far more accurate than a 3rd party.

Will they be more honest? Who knows? Both 3rd parties and CEOs may have motive to lie but 3rd parties don't have to face the SEC.

By Pirks on 2/26/2009 1:18:29 PM , Rating: 2
Jobs is not afraid of SEC when he lies about iPod Touch being "first portable media player with internet capabilities". Why would Ballmer be afraid then?
