Intel's aggressive drive to 32nm has many reconsidering their purchasing plans over the next year.

All Westmere chips will feature higher performance and lower power consumption. This is made possible through the use of fourth generation strained silicon and second generation high-k/metal gate technology, referring to the use of a High-k gate dielectric and a metal gate electrode.

Intel is reporting at least a 22 percent performance increase clock for clock over their 45nm process, and there are still many steppings to go before they go to market. Westmere also has seven new instructions, designed for accelerating encryption and decryption algorithms. All Nahalem and Westmere based processors will use DDR3 exclusively.

The first Westmere chips will be codenamed Clarkdalefeaturing two 32nm logical processors paired with a graphics core and an integrated memory controller built on a 45nm line. By using "Multi-Chip Packaging", Intel will be able to minimize their losses from defective chips on a maturing manufacturing line. Arrandale is the mobile variant, with additional power saving technology for laptops.

Gulftown is the successor to the Nehalem-based Core i7 and is due in the middle of 2010. Gulftown has six cores, but is capable of efficiently handling twelve threads at once, thanks to its next generation Hyper-Threading. It will use the X58 chipset due to the LGA-1366 socket, but there are rumors of a newer version coming in 2010 that will feature support for USB 3.0 and SATA 6Gb/s.

DailyTech has received information that Core i5 Lynnfield and Clarksfield CPUs might be replaced by quad core Westmere variants in the middle of 2010. Intel refuses to comment on unannounced products, although they did state that "additional 32nm products will follow in 2010".

Right now, Intel is focusing on ramping up production of Clarkdale and Arrandale for the fourth quarter of this year. Fab D1D, Intel's manufacturing research factory in Hilsboro, Oregon, is already outfitted with 32nm equipment and will begin commercial production in Q4. Fab D1C and AFO (Aloha Factory Operations), in Oregon as well, will also ramp up in the fourth quarter of this year.

Intel's "Megafab", Fab 32 in Chandler, Arizona, will start 32nm production in early 2010, followed by Fab 11X in Rio Rancho, New Mexico. Other fabs may follow to meet demand.

X59? Its sad that SATA 6Gb/s doesn't show up until mid-2010. We'll have to deal with SSDs that top out at 300MB/s transfer until then (I know, what a shame, right?). Hopefully drives that support SATA 6Gb/s show up sooner.

At least Intel has a good reason to push SATA faster now that they have a high performance product in the storage sector. It would be nice if their IO hub could handle 4 600MB/s drives and actually be able to keep them fed at peak speeds.

I'll agree on that. Make a Raid with a couple of X25s and the 6Gb SATA is blown out.

Actually the read speed for the SLC Intel SSD drives tops out at 250 MB/sec. The SATA bus doesn't share bandwidth, so two of the SLC Intel drives should realize a theoretical 500 MB/sec max read speed in a RAID 0 configuration.

What I'd like to see is SLC Intel drives come in at least a 128GB capacity for around $1.00/GB or less, so us mere mortals can afford RAID 0 setups utilizing this awesome drives.

One of the things people don't realize is NO interconnect achieves 100% efficiency. SATA2-300 is 300MB/s in theory, but the realistic max bandwidth is 80-90% of that.

Unlikely. X25-E drives are marketed towards server/enterprise users. And the pricing is set that way. Previous drives will be phased out and there will be minimum pricing for the new drives just like on CPUs. That's like expecting Xeon prices to come down to Celeron levels. Maybe in 10 years when its absolutely obsolete.

Yes, For lynnfield and clarksdale, socket 1160. P55 and P57 mobos.

This sucks that we will have to wait for Q2 2010 to get what we should be getting in Q4 2009.

It seems that with competition as poor as Intel are facing at the moment, we are lucky to be getting anything new any time soon.

AMD aren't really pushing any boundaries with their CPUs and where is the competition for X58 coming from?

It seems to be more a case of the different departments within Intel competing with each other, pushing each other on and chasing to catch up.

They can't just sit on technology indefinitely though. They have to keep moving and continuously improving, those marketing people need something to release and sell as well so that they are all kept them fresh, ready for competition if/when it arrives.

I don't mean to imply that you were bemoaning Intel for the hold ups by the way.

If anyone is to blame for hold-ups it probably has to be Intel's competitors, or lack there of.

I'd blame the regulators for not ensuring competitors had a level playing field.

For current chipsets, USB and SATA reside in the "ICH", aka the Southbridge.

Intel separates the Northbridge as the primary marketing name of a chipset, aka "X58", "X48", "G45", "G31", etc. In those lines, the ICH version varies.

Current X58 boards use ICH10, so I would imagine that this bump to USB 3.0 and SATA 6 Gb/s combined with "will use the X58 chipset" indicates an upcoming ICH11.

For comparison, the 4-series boards, including ones released simultaneously, use a variety of ICH revision, from Intel's DG41TY using ICH7, to DX48BT2 using ICH9, to DG45ID and DP45SG using ICH10. So Intel has no problem mixing ICHs among the same family of chipset.
