Future of Microsoft Flight Simulator is unknown

Microsoft is now among the many technology firms that have been hit with hard times. The answer to fixing the problems with profitability and poor performance for Microsoft and most other technology firms is to cut jobs and reduce spending.

Microsoft did just that when it announced earlier this week that it would chop 5,000 jobs from its workforce. Among the first casualties to come in the job cuts are reported to be the entire development team for Microsoft's long running Flight Simulator franchise.

Flight Simulator is one of the longest running franchises in gaming with the first version going back to 1982. In fact, Flight Simulator was the game that brought me from Atari consol games to PC gaming in my youth.

The fact that the entire Dev team for Flight Simulator has been axed all but guarantees that Flight Simulator is grounded. The same dev team was reportedly at the helm of another simulation product form Microsoft called Microsoft Train Simulator.

This is a sad day for gamers and fans of Flight Simulator and we can only hope that the axing of the development team doesn’t mean Flight Simulator X is the last version of the venerable game we will ever play.

Perhaps the next Flight Simulator team will improve upon the flight model - which, aside from level flight, is pretty lacking. They do not properly model a large part of the flight envelope. As a training tool for learning the basics of being a pilot, it is pretty good though.

Or code it so it utilizes the gpu more for physics. Flight Simulator seems horribly cpu dependent.

Doesn't matter though, Microsoft(like everyone else) has been treating pc gaming like a red headed step child anyways.

Damn you xbox!!11one. :)

I watched a recently webbed documentary on the FS programmers and the CPU power...
So they are in the dev lab, and the msft geeker is explaining that he so desires to put into the FS engine the calculations for land heighth at like 1" intervals, which would require a teraflop-X amount of cpu cycles.
You could see the guy get his e-geek on talking about it...
Of course, the idiotic msft bloat doesn't stop at the millions of lines of bloatcode for the OS - no - there are insane wackos who think on a desktop screen viewing from 100's or 1,000's of virtual feet up in the sky, you need to have terrain calculated down to one inch increments - and it would be "so cool" to do it.
I just wanted to bash the idiot right through the e-line.
Yes, we know you can code it, YOU IDIOT...
Oh, he was half bald, tubby, homely, and wore big round 1970's geeker specs... and was living in a dream bubble, but I'm sure his Cray workstation could run the simmed 1" terrain test.
What a BLEEP ! moron
