I have said it before and covered it many times -- netbooks are huge right now. The small netbook continues to be one of the biggest growth categories in the computer market. Despite the great sales of netbooks, many companies and analysts dislike the systems for their lower profit margins.

Acer has the most popular netbook in the country right now with its Aspire One netbook. The biggest complaint from many who own or have seen the Aspire One is that it has a small 8-inch screen. Many see the 10-inch netbooks as the sweet spot for portability versus usability.

Acer is looking to keep its top spot in the sales chart with the pending release of its latest netbook featuring a 10-inch screen. The new 10-inch netbook has yet to be priced and no firm launch date has been given. What is known is that it shares the same underpinnings as the 8-inch One, but grows to a 10-inch LCD with the netbook standard 1024 x 600 resolution and is reported to possibly get 2GB of RAM.

Some sources even think that the price tag for a 10-inch One might not increase from the 8-inch version. Several pictures of the 10-inch One have surfaced at SlashGear and one thing you can tell at a glance is that the weird track pad with the buttons on the sides rather than below has been replaced with a standard layout. This should help the most popular netbook in the land retain that spot amid heavy netbook competition.

i really like the old aspire one specs because of the great 5-6 hour life on a charge it can get with the extended batteries... i hope the new ones manages to improve on this even more.

i still wont get it though, just like the original it is not good enough.
there is a potential for a really great device some time soon, with a better resolution, oled backlit screen or even an oled screen, with good touch screen features and screen rotation to convert to a tablet, with little but fun bonuses like fingerprint scanner, accelerometer for auto screen orientation and games, etc...
i'll keep waiting until someone finally delivers. and pc makers better deliver on that soon, because in a couple more years they'd be overtaken by PDAs and smartphones getting more performance than a "netbook" is now.

Those features may very well make it in, but only when they can do so for the right price. Cellphones that have those featues cost more than current netbooks, once you factor out the rebate given by contract pricing.

The bottom line on netbooks is "how much can we cram into a small package for the price point not how much they can cram in at any price point.

Agree with noirsoft. Additionally, while cell phones and PDAs will get more powerful, that doesn't mean the form factor is going to be suitable for all uses. I sure as hell don't want to do writing or anything more than necessity Web access on a cell phone's "keyboard" and 320x240 screen. PDAs? Only if convenience monitors and keyboards to hook up to become ubiquitous.

Cheap laptop without the "have to lug this around" factor? One that goes IN my carry-on, not IS my carry-on. That's what makes netbooks very nice. You seem to be wanting an ultraportable in today's marketing segments, which come with a hefty premium. There is a nice gap to be filled in between them, will be interested in seeing how that happens (for me, 2GB stock +Ion, possiblity of up to 12" really would be all that's reasonably missing).
