A new video making the rounds on the internet aims to educate viewers on the media hysteria surrounding global warming. Nothing more than a collation of various news clips accompanied by a peppy sound track, it lists some of the many events which have been attributed to climate change: everything from cannibalism and kidney stones, to earthquakes and prostitute shortages in Eastern Europe.
The nine and a half-minute video, which can be seen on YouTube, is entitled "Global Warming Causes More Sex". Also blamed on global warming were events such as rises in mental illness, brain eating amoebas, decreases in racial and sexual equality, increased numbers of plane crashes, invasions of vampire moths and killer jellyfish, and the possible explosion of the planet itself. And, of course: more sex. For everything from seals to human beings.
Some claims were highly specific -- one story attributed the 1993 "Black Hawk Down" helicopter crash in Somalia to climate change. Another blamed it for the birth of a three-headed frog. Even the absence of the Loch Ness Monster was chalked up to climate change.
While the clip is light hearted, it is not a spoof -- all the claims originally appeared in media sources such as the BBC, the Times U.K, CNN, MSNBC, and others.
Many of the claims are contradictory, such as stories claiming both colder and warmer winters, ones predicting more plant growth versus ones claiming less, larger coral reefs versus smaller ones, saltier oceans versus declines in salinity, and even a pair of stories, one claiming future wines will be stronger, the other weaker-- all courtesy of man's greenhouse gas emissions. In classic Ponzi-scheme style, no matter what happens, at least half the predictions will be correct.
The video was created by Robert Wagner, a financial analyst and optometrist from Ohio. Wagner says he created the video to tell "the story the media is failing to deliver". The material is drawn from the website, "A Complete List of Things Caused by Global Warming", created by Dr. John Brignell, Emeritus Engineering Professor at the University of Southampton, U.K. According to the site's mission statement, its goal is to combat "the scares, scams, junk, panics, and flummery cooked up by the media, politicians, bureaucrats, so-called scientists and others who try to confuse you".
Wagner, who says he is entirely self-funded, plans more videos on the subject.
